BOWLERS V. NON-BOWLERS. Tho above niatch was advanced a further stage at the rooms of the Wellington Chess Club on Saturday everiiiiK, there being another large attendance of members and visitors. The same between tho two captains, Messrs. Barnes and W. E. Mason, naturally attracted moet attention, and was tho more interesting because it was punctuated here and there by littlo slips. The first of those lost Mason a pawn, and the next oversight was niado by Barnes, who was subjected to a attack from which' he extricated hinieolf at a cost of two pawns. Shortly afterwards Maeou,. in tum, made a weak move, which, as was disclosed in tho "post mortem," should have lost him the game in a few nioves. Instead, however, of exchanging rooks Barnes attempted a short cut to victory by sacrificing a rook for a pawn. Unfortunately for him there-was one flaw in an otherwise brilliant combination, and as Mason could parry the attack and enter the end-game a rook to the good, Barnes resigned without further play. It was an instructive game and naturally appealed to tho spectators more than a perfectly sound drawn game would have done. As a result of the further games played last week the score of the match is now ae follows:—NonBowlers, 16 win; Bowlers, 9 drawn games 3,; and 11 games outstanding (to be accounted for hy the end of this week). The Bowlers will, it is clear, have to finish very strongly if they are to win' the match, the'full score of which ire hope to publish next week. THE WELLINGTON SOUTH CLUB. This clnb'e championship tourney was advanced a further stage on Thursday evening, when wins were scored by. Messrs. G. P. Anderson, A. Clark and H. J. Thompson. Mr.'Anderson also won a game outstanding from an earlier round.
