MAGISTRATE'S COURT

Mr. L. G: Reid, S.M., presided at the Magistrate's Court on Saturday. About a fortnight ago Michael Crowloy was convicted in the Magistrate's Court for assaulting Nellie Wells and was fined 40s. Hβ was allowed time in.whioh to pay the fine, and paid it on Friday last. After paying the fine ho went to the woman and told her he had juat paid 40s. on her account, and he would give her another thrashing for it. He carried out his threat, punishing the woman rather severely. Hβ appeared in Court on Saturday and pleaded guilty to the charge of assault and was sentenced to four months' imprisonment, ■ . ;

For insobriety five first offenders were convicted and discharged; Hans Skott; who was convicted of being drunk while in charge of a motor-car, waa fined 205., default being fixed at three days' imprisonment.

Daniel Leonard Edwards was found guilty of tho theft of a gold ring of the value of £4, the property of Ida May Whitemau. The parties were on friendly terms and while intoxicated accused placed the ring on his fingor and forgot to return it when leaving the house. He was convicted and fined 205., in the alternative seven day's' imprisonment.

John Joseph O'Riordan, for whom Mr. H. F. O'Lcary appeared, was remanded to Thursday on bail :on a charge of having insufficient lawful means of support.

Charles Henry Roxborough was remanded to appear in Masterton. on May 2 on a charge of committing bigamy. ,

■Tho case against Joseph Nicholls, charged with breaking aiid . entering the warehouse of John Duthie and Co. and stealing electro-plated ware of the value of £84 Bs., was adjourned to Wednesday, May 2.

A CIVIL ACTION. Reserved judgment was given by Mr. L. G. Keid, S.M., in the case of tho Excelsior Laundry Co. v. N. Bertanees, a claim for £8 4s. 4d. for laundry work. The defendant counterclaimed for goods alleged not to have been returned by the plaintiff. Judgment was given for plaintiff for £4 15s. Bd., and the defendant was nonsuited on the counter-claim. ■ At the hearing Mr. W. L. Rothenberg 'appeared for plaintiff and Mr. P. W. Jackson for defendant.
