ST. JOSEPH'S FANCY FAIR

AND SALE OF WORK. The Concert. Chamber of the Town Hall was well filled on Saturday evenins, when the Fancy Fair, in aid of the Infant School and Kindergarten, was officially declared open by the Mayoress (Mrs. J.- P. Luke). Mr. J. J. L. Burke, in a few introductory remarks, thanked His Grace Archbishop O'Shea and the Mayorese for honouring the", occasion with their presence. The proceeds of the fair would be devoted to completing the paymente on account of the Marist Brothers' residence in Tasman, Street, ■and in forming the nucleus of ft fund for erecting a new infant school and kindergarten whieli is urgently needed in St. Joseph's Parish.

His Grace Archbishop O'Shea expressed the pleasure the committee felt m seeing the Mayoress present,' and conveyed to Mrs. Luke sincere congratulations upon, the unopposed return of Mr. Luke to the high and responsible position of Chief Magistrate of the capital City. The work of His Worship and Mrs. Luke had been muchappreciated by the citizens, and their efforts on behalf of the soldiers, and in war affairs generally, would never be forgotten. The objeot-of the fair was a worthy one, and His Grace commended it to the generosity of all, and 'concluded by inviting the . Mayoress to declare the fair open. .

_Mrs. Luke thanked His Grace Archbishop O'Shea. for his very kind reference to the work of the Mayor and the Mayoress in connection with publio affairs, and thanked the citizens for the honour shown to Hie Worship by returning him to office unopposed. The work of the .past two years had indeed been strenuous, but it was gratifying indeed to find that it had been appreciated by the citizens in such a substantial manner. Tlie object for which, the fair was being held wae one that everyone could support, as the claims of the children' came before everything else. Mrs. Luke concluded by wishing the fair every possible success, and had much pleasure in declaring it open. During the evening the pupils of Miss Guise executed- a number of dances in fancy costume, which were remarkable for grace and precision of movement, and were much enjoyed by the audience. Good business was done at each of the_stalls, and the returns for the evening were most satisfactory. The fair will remain open every evening this week, with matinees on Wednesday and Saturday. ..'...- The decorations of the various stalls had been very effectively carried out, each one having been arranged with a different colour echome. Sullivan, Mrs. Rylands, Mrs. Mrs. O'Sullivan, Mrs. Carroll; No. 4, Mrs. O'Flaherty, Mrs. Holloway, Miss Craig, Miss Phelan, Mies Moran and Miss Treadgold.
