A South Island farmer has predicted 'that when tho war is over, there, will be a vast amount of gorse-cutting,; grubbing, and general clearing ud to do on farms, as most farmers have now reached a stage when, owing to theshortago of labour, they can do very little more than attend to tiieir stock and cropping. Mr. E. H. Hiley, general manager of* Now Zealand Railways, writing to the Wairarapa Egg Circle in reference to an inquiry as to whether empty egg crates would he accepted for conveyance' by rail under the restricted goods services, states that as egg crates are specially fitted for the conveyance of eggs for consumption, they would nofc bo included under the category cf returned empty cases, and would he accepted for conveyance as hitherto. A census of the amount of coal in the possession of every person usually, hold-! ing a stock of five tons or more is to be taken throughout New Zealand on April 30. Mr. Malcolm Fraser. Government Statistician, states that the census is being taken by regulations under the' Census and Statistics Act. and that tho penalty for neglect or refusal'to supply the return is .£2O. Forms on which the return is to be made aro obtainable at the post offices. Officers of the Post and TolegrnDh Department have been authorised to collect these Teturns, and any return not called for by May i should be posted . immediately to the.
