NOTES AND COMMENTS

IBi Glenoob.l The likely starters in the Hawko's Bay Stakes are: Crowhurst, Vagabond, Kill 'Em, Gamecock, Silver Tongue, Hymestra, and Estland. Two very fast horses in Postillion and Tyson are engaged in the Hack Hurdles at Hawera, and it will be interesting to see how the pair get on over the first mile, and which will be in front at that point. _ Both horses have schooled well in private, the former particularly so, but they may be different horses in a field, though their, great pace should soon get them clear of the ruck.

Considering that Chortle has only got the same weight in the Hawke's Bay Cup as he ran second with in the Autumn Handicap at Trentham, the handienpper cannot bo said to. have heeu harsh on him. He is only giving Kilhoy 21b., and when it is remembered that the latter is a three-year-old, he has "the best of it with the top-weight, despite his. Wellington form. However/the Gold Cup winner may - not be there, which is a pity, as' his presence would lend additional■ interest to'the meeting. Toa Tere and Adjutant will also ho missing, but Sasanof and fekrill 'are on the spot, and the better of them is likely to start. Mr. Gerald Stead thought The Toff was certain to beat Kilboy -at Trentham, and for his two defeats he now gets a concession of 91b, Multifual, Sst. 51b., is coming down in the weights, hut he seems to have gone off, and is hardly likely to be back to form next week. Menelaus, 7st. JOlb., is nicely placed, arid after the bad luck the little fellow had at Trehthaih, his owner may be tempted to send him up to Hastings. Indigo, 7st, 91b., is well in, and may be in tho front division at the finish. Of the light-weights, Multicipal,'Cst. 131b., reads tho best, ns he wns very prominent for a long way in tho Autumn Handicap at Trentham. Ascalon, who has an engagement in the Hack Hurdle events at the Egmont meeting, has already arrived at Hawera. He was raced at Opunake on March 17, but the long journey by road got to the bottom of him, as he is a very fast walker, and will not settle down. He is now all right again, and should give a good account of himself at Hawera. In sporting circles it is. thoujht that after a couple of weeks the Eaihvay' Department will be able to carry racehorses again, as by that time the shortago of coal will bo caught up. A recent publication of the Gazette notifies that in future racehorses will have to be paid for both ways. Owners are reminded that, acceptances for the Hawko's Bay meeting, close on Tuesday.. ",'■'.'.' ''"..'. .7' '...."..'.'.' '•' .... Eongopai, who.fell and broke Ills iieck at Randwick on Wednesday, is. a Now Zenlaud-bred 'gedding,' and' Ifails' from the stud of. the late J. E. M'Donald, of Heatherlea, "Levin.--A couple of years back ho was sent to Melbourne, whoro he won several races with B. Camoron in the saddle. In. the sjiring ho.was sold to go to Sydney, but his new owner failed to win a race with him. The Eokeby filly Robur, who is owned an Wellington, but. is trained at-New Plymouth, is at present being .indulged in a spell,..and is not likely to be seen out at the Egmont meeting. ''.... Bisogne is under orders to raco at tho 'Manawatu meeting, but how the chestnut is. to be got there is at present puzzling his trainer. The Bezonian horse nns now quite recovered from the soreness which made itself apparent after the Hawera meeting in February. On the return journey from Trentham the Now Plymouth horses, Cora Orn, Goldon Grafton, and Lady Mylohreest, took three days to reach homo. This was on account of the reduced train service. I Tho For'dell horses Pohehe, Ararat, and Mia Cara are to raco at, Hawera next month, arid then will bo brought back for tho Wanganui meetiug. Tho Egmont Racing Club has unanimously resolved, notwithstanding the railway restrictions, to hold the autumn meeting on May 9 and 10, tho dates previously arranged.—Press • Association.
