DOMINION FURNITURE CO., LTD., Luring the last fifteen mouths there lias. sprung. into existence an industry whicli has every promise of having, come to stay. The business was-started a little over 12 mouths ago by S. J. Sullivan and Co., Wanganm, wno recognised the possibilities oi ail up-to-date xnrmturc factory, situated .in the centre of the North Island, which if it confined its activities to turning out the best class of goods would have no difficulty in growing to a large and profitable concern. So rapid was the growth of the business that it was not long before they wero compelled to look for larger premises and additional plant. After considering various schemes it was decided to form the business into a limited company under tho Companies' Act, and to erect premises that would relieve the situation aud allow for future expansion. Mr.. Sullivan, w;ho directs the company, is simply a furniture man and- gooddraughtsman, with a first-class-.training; and experience.in the best houses.. The ■ result of: this is seen in the activities of the furniture industry in Wanganui to-day. Good work and excellent design are foremost in tho company's productions, which are now finding an increasing sale in all the chief centres of the North Island,- and are finding their way into the South. - The company's works alone cover close oil an. acre of ground. The machine room itself covers nearly half an acre, and here are tho 'most up-to-date labour-saving machines and devices, which change the rough timber from the yard iuto the separate parts that- go to make a sideboard, a bedroom suite, or any other article of furniture. Furnituro is here built on the samo prinoiple as tho motor-car, and only requires assembling to present to the view the constructor's product. For the purpose of assembling, the work is run into the cabinot shop on trucks, and here the several parts aro glued together by an efficient* staff of operatives. From tho cabinet shop the assembled product goes to tlie polishing room, and the work then passes to the fitting shop', whero it is fitted up and mounted with handles, mirrors, etc., and from here passes to the showroom, from which it finds its way to the dispatch department, where it is carefully packed in cases ready for consignment to itsdestination. Tho company's timber yards aro at the rear of tho works, and cover an acre of ground. Good work demands seasoned timbers, and to get this tho company decided to dry its own timber.
