THE MENACE OF FOREIGN FLOUR
A LETTER FROM HONG-KONG. Tho following .letter has been received by Mr. P. Virtue, of Auckland, from Mr. W. Dunbar, flour broker, llong-Kong:— , "Hong-r£ong, November 10, 1916. "I have just returned from a trip to Japan, where wo spent a month pleasantly, and during that time I visited ono of tho large flour mills, which turns out 150 tons per day, and is now being increased to 200 tons. It was a modern plant with one American miller in charge, all tho work being done by natives, and it is well done. Tho mill had 10,000 tons of wheat piled up. This was drawn from Japan, Korea, and North China. While the wheat from Japan is small and dirty, that from Manchuria, North China, is very fair, and I think in time will make itself felt in tho world's •• markets. They export now about 2,000,000 tons of beans every year, and no donbt they will increase their wheat in due time. Japan is now selling flour in London made from China wheat, and getting £18 per ton for it. Not bad for a start."—(Published by Arrangement.)
