—.—^ A return chess match between players from the Fcatherstou Camp and members of tho Wairarapa Chess Club resulted in a win for the former, who were strengthened .by ■ Wairarapa substitutes, by half a point. As the Masterton County Council, through an unfortunate clerical error, did not hold its meeting oil Wednesday for tho election of chairman, it will be necessary/ for an Order-in-Coun-cii to be passed validating the election, which takes place, oil Wednesday next. The Masterton branch ■of the Y.M.C.A. lias now a membership of 400 young men and hoys, and over 2500 attendances arc put in monthly at the rooms. . Mrs. H. Gorringe, of Kaituna, had her hand severely crushed whilo working ia cream separator on Thursday. On the same day,' Mr. T. Cooper, of Stronvar, had a finger severed while engaged shearing. As a result of a canvass recently made' in Masterton by the Rev. R. Franklin on behalf of a diocesan school movement, a sum of between £300 and £400 was realised. 1 Voluntary attestations in the. Wairarapa military district during the past few (lavs, have-been practically at a standstill. The Masterton Ladies' Auxiliary of the. Navy League raised a sum of £150 this week to nrovido special comforts for the men of the Navy.
