NOTES AND COMMENTS

IBy Qlescoe.l

Once again the fields at Biccarton are on the large side, and matters do not seem any brighter for devotees of the machine. In the Port Coopor Hurdles the topweight, Art, may ba favourite, for ho is very well at present, and cach race seems to be improving him. He is a horse that can stand a lot of riding and carries weight well. Crib is a poor jumper, and Vascular will be meeting better company than when he was successful. Hikakakeke

tires badly, and his first race eecmed to get to the bottom of him.

Tho Cressy Welter Handicap has drawn an acceptance of twenty, but Fabriioff has also an engagement in the Members' Handicap, run later in the day. The form of the meeting points to Gold Soult, Hyginas, and Ardent, as sure to run well. The last-named was very unlucky in the Avon Welter, as ho got into somo loose going next to the fence, and when his rider got him clear his position was at tho tail of the field. Later on he went round and .finished well in second place. The long straight should suit Gold Soult, who will have the services of B. Deeley. The .Seymour Handicap, seven furlongs, has several useful hacks in it, and Findhorn, a winner on tho socond day, may be the machine favourite. Sir Tarka, who is alongside of him in the handicap may be similarly placed in tho race. Down ran creditably for this distance in the Spying Plate, and the trio named will probably command most attention.

Threo is an- unlikely starter in the Members' Handicap, and will most likely do reserved ior the Electric Plate. Bee did not run well on the second clay, and was evidently feeling the effects of her race in the Stewards' Handicap. Melfchikoff raced well in both his starts, but tho hard tracks may throw Martius back. Bertrada is coming on and should ba seen at her best to-day with the going to suit her. Chakwana is i.ot herself, but Kaminohe, who was heavily supported in tho Epsom High Woight Handicap, and failed, though she showed up well for seven furlongs, is certain to be in tho market to-day. Two winners, in Sweot Tipperary. and Killena, down to contest tho Pioneer Handicap, five furlongs. This is a distance that should suit the big Chukebor'e colt, Good Hope, who is always noticed to bo running on at tho end of his races. Egypt should bo hard to beat, taking a lino through his form in tho Juvenile Plate with Threo. The Stead Cup will bo interesting, inasmuch a.s it will give Warstop a chance of measuring strides with ttio unbeaten Desert Gold, and tho battle between the pair should bo full of interest. Should tho pair bo badly handled and ridden to a standstill, the Chokcbovo colt, Plying Start, a slow beginner, may finish on tho best. Emperador is making his first an-

icaranco of tho season, and may bo in vanfc of a race.

In the Electric Plate, four furlongs, tho ;nL'o<ly Threo is asked to givo nearly 2st.

lo sunife of the two-year-olds, ito is such a smart beginner that he may bo able lo do it. though Nystad (G. Clarke) reads daDgerous.

I'im mating *!1! with ib# iaito Spidioasj aaa BJJIO aad a awtsr,

They am not a good lot, and Eligible, 7st. 121b., after his form in tho City Handicap at Ellerslie, may bo selected as favourite. At Auckland Eligible jumped off ill front, and led all tho way, tho beaten division including Merry Roe and Colonel Soult. Tliero is nothing of tho clafs of this pair engaged in tho Fendalton Handicap.

Nominations for tho Stratford Racing Club's meeting closo 011 Monday, December G. with tho club's secretary, Mr. Alfred Coleman.

111 connection with the Marlborough. Racing Club's Spring Meeting, special arrangements are being made for the transport of North Island sportsmen. Tho Union Company's Pateena will leave Wellington for Pioton at 7 p.m. 011 Tuesday next, and passengers will bo taken on to Blenheim by train, arriving in good timo for the first day's racing on Wednesday.

Owners and trainers are reminded that acceptances for the Ashhurst meeting close to-day. Tho Ashhurst telegraph office is open until 8 p.m.
