ALLEGED THEFT OF MONEY
CASE AGAINST R. S. MENZIES. By Tclotraph—Press Association. Dunedin, September 29. The police proceeded to-day with two of the charges preferred against Robert Sproule Meuzies, late manager of the insurance department of Neill and Co. The first .charge was . of stealing £62 odd,/and the second of £77 odd. Both these charges indicted accused of theft from his employers, and Mr. Hay, for accused, w'hile stating that ho was instructed to plead guilty where he reasonably could, pointed out that the evidence stowed that the moneys belonged to other insurance companies for which Neill and Co. /were agente, and that the charge of theft from an employer was much more serious, involving 14 years' imprisonment. The Magistrate allowed the matter of pleading to stand over until he had considered on what charge accused should be committed. In the afternoon the Magistrate decided to amend the charges to read that accused, being, a servant of Neill and Co., did steal £62 ss. 3d. and £77, 18s. 6d., the property of the Union Insurance Society of Canton, and the Indemnity Mutual Marine Insurance. CoAccused pleaded guilty and was committed to the Supremo Court for sentence.
