FRESH GAINS IN THE • WEST' VIVID IMPRESSIONS OF THE GREAT BATTLE BRITAIN WARNS BULGARIA HEAVY ATTACKS ON , THE RUSSIANS PRIME MINISTER APPEALS TO THE WORKERS . ' Further progress by the 'Allied armies in the Western theatro is reported to-day. Tho great offensive has now settled down to a.grim, dogged fight for every yard of ground, and the public is advised by critics not to look for rapid progi'ess. Vivid accounts of various phases of the great battle are arriving from the war correspondents, • and these, together with the experiences of wounded officers and men, present an awe-inspiring picture. The artillery bombardment was tre- !. mendous in extent, devastating in its effects, and fairly stupefied the enemy. The advance of tho French in Champagne has, been enlivened by the entry of the cavalry into the scheme of things. While these titanic efforts are. being made on the battlefields, the British Prime Minister and Lord Kitchener have been fighting a different ' kind of battle in the labour arena, and the message which conveys the news mentions a "critical period," and "grave appeals."' In the Russian theatre the enemy is heavily attacking at certain points, and claims'very large captures at .the Vilna"battle. Mr. Asquith has declined to be drawn on the situation in the Dardanelles, or to discuss the question of national service. Sir Edward Grey has enumerated Britain's policy with regard to-the Balkans, and conveyed a plain warning to Bulgaria.
