Mr. Harold Beauchamp, chairman of the Bank of New Zealand, returned from a visit to Australia by the Manuka yesterday.

Tho death occurred on Tuesday, says our Featherston correspondent, of Dr. James Wallace, at tho ago of 86 years. After serving about six years in, the British Navy as surgeon, tlio late Dr. Wallace arrived in Now Zealand by tho ship Ashburton in 1857, and shortly afterwards settled down to farming, and had resided hero ever since. Deceased was a widower, his wife, who was a sister of the late Mr. E. W. Mills, of Wellington, having died ill 1301. There wore no children.

Mt. Knox found affairs to be a goo<t deal worse than anticipated, and asked that six business men and four investigators bo dispatched to Egypt at onco. This request-is being acceded to.

After .14 years' service in- the Wellington Firo Brigade, Deputy-Superin-tendent Stewart is about to scvor his connection with tho brigade. The opportunity was .taken at a reunion of firemen s,nd fire police last evening to make a presentation to Mr. Stewart The Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke), in making the presentation on behalf of the Wellington firemen and fire police, spoke in high terms of the Deputy-Superin-tendent's service with the brigade, and pointed out the loss that, would be felt as a result of hie retirement. Superintendent Taifc also spolco feelingly of his long association with Mr. Stewart, and expressed regret at the loss of his service. Captain Wright, of the fire police,' also spoke highly of Mr. Stewart. The presentation took the form of a silver watch, and to Mrs. Stewart two 6ilver ornaments. '
