(Continued from Page 2) For Soldiers and Nurses, Yesterday the Mayoress and one or two members of lier committco at tlio Town Hall began their Christmas shopping for tho soldiers at the front. As may bo imagined ; it meant a fairly, 'strenuous time, and will continue for some days. Among the tilings that were ordered were tinned iish, pipes, tobacco, chocolate, cocoa, sweets, toothbrushes, combs, and various other things. A gift of one thousand pocket writing pads was received by the Mayoress yesterday from Mrs. W. Johnston/of "Highden," for the men at the front. " Provision is also; being made for the nurses' Christmas gifts. It will be remembered that about one hundred and eighty nurses were dispatched on service abroad, including those on the hospital ship." Their numbers will not bo materially decreased, although there will be some returning on the next hospital ships. While the. Countess of Liverpool Committee is remembering the nurses there arc many people in New Zealand who would also like -to send them; some token of appreciation of the fine work they are doing, for our soldiers. Gifts need not be expensive, 'as.it is the thought behind that counts. Trifles such as chocolates, handkerchiefs, bath slippers, lavender water, eau de Cologne, toilet requisites, small tins of tliscuits,' and all sorts of things that women appreciate might be sent, and will do much to make our women who often feel homesick for New Zealand happier and brighter because they are remembered by people in peaceful little New Zealand.

The secretary of the Hutt.Waistcoat Committeo (Miss Stuart-Forbes) states that there was a hearty response to the request that all waistcoats should be handed in yesterday, hut as there are still some outstanding garments, it is advisable that they should be returned not later than noon to-morrow.

, Tlie opening of the season of the Karori Croquet Club took place yesterday afternoon. Several visitors from town braved the wind and several games .were played, 'the grounds being in excellent condition. The Mayor- of Karori (Mr. Burn) opened the season with a brief speech, and later in the afternoon tea was provided, the tables in the pavilion having been prettily decorated with spring flowers. Among those who were present were Mrs. Burn, Mrs. Hutching s (president of the club), Mrs. Cook, Mrs. Monaghan, Mrs. Campbell, Mrs. Christie, Mrs. Bamfield, Mrs. Goodor (secretary), Mrs. H. Dryden. ' It;is'the intention of the club to divide one of the large greens into two, so that more games will be provided for players.

• The gift tea of the Levin Memorial Homo takes place this afternoon at the Home ,at Berhampore. Such excellent work a;s that which is .-being done for'children in this institution should not be allowed to languish, even though it be war-time, and gifts of material, groceries, and money will help.to "oil the wheels" ,in these troubled days.

A-jumble sale in aid of .the Taranaki Street Kindergarten, .opposite . Frederick Street (one of the Richmond freo kindergartens), isto be held on Saturday afternoon. Gifts for the purpose will be gladly welcomed.

Arrangements for a small sale of work J and garden party to be '■held at Mrs. Morpetli's residence, The Terrace, on Friday afternoon have been made by a committee of girls. The proceeds are to go towards -the' provision of Christmas gifts for the soldiers. There will be stalls for flowers and sweets, and a fortune-teller should provide imuch entertainment. . '

. By the permission of the Commandant, Colonel Pollen, the , men who have been in camp at Tanherinikau, but who are now spending a. few days in town, will be entertained, in the. Town Hall on Friday and Saturday evenings by the Mayoress and the councillors' wives. Plans for securing a very pleasant and quite' informal evening are now being made, and as it would bo impossible, to entertain them all in the hall on tho one night these two evenings have been set aside for the purpose. The guests will be largely composed of tho 7tli Reinforcements.
