iMEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL. At the fortnightly meeting of the City Council last evening, tlie Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) presided, and there were also present: Councillors W. H. I'. Barber, G. Frost, J. Godber, J. liutelieson, W. J. Thompson, W. H. Bennett, M.. F. Luckie, \Y. T. Hildreth, John Fuller, jun., L. M'Kenzie, J. E. Fitzgerald, and A. R. Atkinson. On tho recommendation, of the Financo Committee, it was decided that an offer without prejudice he made to a property-owner at Crawford Road for tho purchase of his property at Crawford Road required for tramway purposes; in terms of the City • Valuor's {id vice. It was resolved to obtain from London estimates of cost aud particulars relating to an electrically-driven watersprinkler, with a convertible body to permit the use of it during tho winter months for general City purposes. The Town Clerk's recommendations as to tho settlement of certain claims for damages and disturbance of business at the setting-back operations to the Willis Street shops, were adopted. The Finance Committee reported that they had declined the request of tho New Zealand Patriotic Society that the council's claim for £31 las. • for electrical services rendered' at Newtown Park at the recent' assault-at-arms be waived. The action of the committee was approved by the council. It was reported that certain lighting improvements had been effected in the Kelburn district. - The application of the- Kelburn Ratepayers' Association to alter tho position of the lamp at tlie corner of Glen and Upland Roads, to trim tho trees 'at Church Street steps, and to erect a lamp outside the pavilion at Kelburn Park were not recommended by the oflicers. The committee endorsed the officers' reports regarding the first and second requests ; but resolved to. reserve 'the question of the erection of a lamp at Kelburn Park Pavilion for a visit of inspection. Hie recommended works -were estimated to cost £33 os.—The report was adopted. The By-Law's Committee reports that they had obtained the City Solictor'sopinion on tho question 'raised by tlie petition received from property-holders in tlie vicinity of Messrs. D. Robertson and Co.'s Foundry in Old Customhouse Street, protesting against the smoke nuisance caused- by the firm's foundry chimney. The- solicitor pointed out the difficulties confronting the corporation in proceeding against tlie owners, and .advised that a simple and easy remedy is open to the petitioners in proceeding for an injunction in respect of a private nuisance. The committee recommended that tho petitioners be advised in terras of the report, and tlie recommendation was agreed to. Tenders were accepted as' follow:— Transformers', the National Electrical Co.; insulated wire, Messrs. Richardson, M'Cabe, and Co.
