ONSLOW BOROUGH COUNCIL
:— : ——4— The fortnightly meeting of the Onslow '■ Borough Council was held . la6t night. ' There were present:—The Mayor (Mr. C. C. Crump), and Councillors J. C. Gardner, L. A. Browne, C. Bowden, J. It. Dale, A. E. Budd, TV. Appleton, and J. G. Smith. .Considerable discussion followed on a motion ■by Councillor Budd—"That tho ■ council consider the advisability, of installing a sanitary service in the borough." Councillor Budd urged that the installation of such a service was eminently- desirable. He considered that the best method of dealing with' the sewage was by septic tank, while the council might work in with the City in this resjject. The speaker considered that Onslow should imitate Karori in its system. To the latter borough the cost was about sd. or s}d. weekly for each house. There; wero about 400. houses to be served at Oiislow, and the speaker thought these could be. served weekly cost of Gd. The cost of installingaseptic tank would be about Tho motion was seconded by Councillor Appleton. ' . Councilor Gardner considered .that the matter should be embodied in a comprehensive report. In his opinion water Should be primarily installed in. tho borough. As an amendment, be moved that the matter be referred to the Sanitation Committee. . . ' Tho Mayor considered they should approach the City Council to see'; if Onslow could co-operate with tho City. .Eventually ' Councillor Gardner' withdrew his amendment, and the motion was carried, the matter being referred to a. special committee, consisting of Councillors Dale, Palmer, and Budd. A cheque for -C 2 ss. was received from the Khandallah Literary and Debating Society, being the amount of a collection . taken up recently by the society for tho Belgian Fund. ' The engineer reported!that ho had conferred with Mr. Nairn'in regard to his quarry, and the owßer asked a royalty upon all stone taken out of Is. per cubic yard as against M. at present. In the alternative, Mr. Nairn suggested that the council ,purchase'''from him one or two acres at =£150 'per acre. On the recommendation of the engineer, it was decided to refuse both offers.
