TECHNICAL EDUCATION

MEETING OF THE BOARD. The monthly .meeting of the Wollington Technical Education Board was hold last night. Thero ;were.present: 'Mr. 6. Frost (in tho cliair), and tho Hon. J. 6: N .W;'..Aitkon, tho Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke), and Mossrs. M. F. Luckie and J. E. Fitzgerald.. . • '",A letter was received from the Christchurch Technical Education Board urging a limited extension of'free tedinical. education facilities." The southern board advocated that the privilege, of free education to all desirous of taking up trade, agricultural, or domestic science courses. It was advanced in tho letter that the present regulations granting tho right of, freo education only.to those, who had obtained proficiency certificates prevented largo numbers -of availing themselves of the benefits of the technical- schools. Tho writes suggested that the matter bo _ brought before the Council of Education, and by deputation to tile Minister. It was decided to ;'support the Chrisfchurch Board ill its proposals. • ' The director (Mr. W. S. La.'.Trobe) reported that ho had sent copies of his .report in respect to the training of disabled soldiers to tho Education Department and Boards of Managers of other. Technical Colleges. Mr.' La Trobe stated that tho Department had under consideration proposals for dealing with the matter, and his Teport would probably bo of some service. Ho had had several letters of approval from boards of managers. From time to time lie proposed to consult the Labour Department and tho Education Department on tho matter. Letters 'wero received from the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts and tho Now- Zealand Institute of Architects asking for representation on the board, ancT offering to subsidise the board to tho amount of £10. in. tho event of such representation being granted. It was decided to defer consideration of tlio matter until the regulations under the new Act arc issued.^ A ' vote of appreciation was passed to tho' cookery classes lor their work in organising a'sale in aid of'tho Disabled Soldiers' Fund. The monthly financial statement of tho board's accounts showed 011 tho receipt side fees totalling £100 ss. (£BG 13s. 6d. 111 1014). Tlie total receipts wero £1369 lis. 2d., as compared with £1940 17s'. Gd. in 1914. Expenditure was sot down at'£B42 3s. lid. (£BOI 9s. 2d."in 1914). Where ,a credit balanco- of £286 13s. was shown in 1914 a debit balance of £889 l : ls. Id. .was shown for 1915.
