Tlio death took place at Napier at an early hour yesterday morning of Mr. J. N. Williams, owner of the Frimloy Estate, and an old and respected settlor of Hawke's Bay. The deceased gentleman, who was about 75 years of ago, was a son of tlio late Right Rov. AYilliam Williams, the first Bishop of Waiapu, and a younger brother of Bishop Leonard Williams, of Napier, and he was born on the East Coast His death was not unexpected as he had been ill for the past year. He was a cousin of the late Mr. T. C. Williams, of Wellington, and both wore married to daughter's of the late Mr. Wm. Beetham. His wifo died some years ago, and he has left a family of four sons (Me6srß. Arnold and Heathcote Williams, of Gisborao, and Messrs. Cyril and Erio Williams, of Hawke's Bay), and three daughters (Mrs. Guy Russell, Mrs. Frank Nelson, and 1 Miss Elsie Williams). Mr. Algar Williams, of Wellington, who is a nephew of the deceased gentleman, left for Hastings yesterday morning to attend the funeral. A Press Association message from Napier states that in co-operation with the Rev, Samuel Williams, the deceased gentleman was instrumental in bringing into profitable occupation large areas of land on the East Coast. He was of a kindly and generous disposition, his good deedß were many and widespread. Ha presented Hastings with a park and Napier Hospital with a ward, and was ever ready to lend a helping hand to those who were in need. He was a great chffrchman, and the Church of England in the Hawke's Bay district owes much to his beneficence. Mr. Welcome H. Lawson, of Chicago, is a visitor to Wellington. He will probably remain in the City until Tuesday next. A Press Association message from Sydney received last evening states that the Revs. G. L. and A. Lawrence had arrived, en route for New Zealand. Pte. George Douglas M'lntyre, a son. of Mr. Harry M'lntyre, of Morrinsville, who was recently reported to have been wounded at the Dardanelles, lias had to have ono of his arms amputated. Pte. M'lntyre is a nephew of Mr. Charles M'lntyre, secretarj of the New Zealand Natives' Association. Among the earliest lists of injured New Zealanders in the Dardanelles campaign was the name of Sergeant John Clark, of the accountant's branch of Joseph Nathan and Co., Wellington, and brother of Mr. D. G. Clark, the Commissioner of Taxes. Sergeant Clark was unfortunate enough to have both of his , legs badly shattered by shrapnel fire, since when it las been found necessary to amputate one of his legs, whilst the other is still very badly injured. Mr. Clark was a very fine specimen of manhood, and a devotee of physical culture. Official word has been received in Dunedin, says a Press Association telegram, that Corporal C. W. Saunders, who received the Distinguished Coiiduet Medal, is Corporal Saunders, of Dunedin, with the British section of the New Zealanders, Main Body. Mr. H. Turner, at present examiner on the staff of the Publio Trust Office, has been appointed assistant accountant to the Public Trust Office. Mr. T. F. Warren 8.A., formerly headmaster of the Richmond West School. Auckland, and lately acting relieving inspector in the Auckland Education District, has been permanently appointed to the rank: of inspector. Mr. Tom Duffy (says the Christchurch "Sun"), the well-known forward of the Albion Football Club, and accountant at Messrß. Reece Bros., Christchurch, has been appointed to a position on the staff of the Royal New Zealand Artillery. ' For the last eight months Mr. Duffy -fyas been one of the. garrison of Ripa Island, and his departure for Wellington is much regretted by the members of the Garrison Artillery, of which he was a prominent member. Mr. Arthur M. Vile, of the literary staff of the "Wairarapa Age," and son of the editor of that paper, has enlisted for service abroad, and has been notified to proceed to Trentham on Tuesday next. The Rev. Ford-Hutchinson, of Eketahuna, is leaving shortly for the Trentham Camp, where he will take up the duties of Chaplain, says our Masterton correspondent. Private John Nathaniel Williams, of the Auckland Infantry Battalion, who was yesterday reported as having been killed in action, was a brother of Mrs. Wallis, wifo of Bishop Wallis, lato of Wellington. He was an old Eton boy, and at the .time of enlisting was employed at Waihi. Deceased's next-of-kin is his father, Colonel Williams, M.P., Dorsetshire, England. Mr. Patterson, engineer-foreman of tho Wellington Patent Slip, mot with a Bevere accident early yesterday afternoon, which resulted in his two legs being broken. One leg suffered a compound fracture. The accident was caused by a 'heavy piece of rail metal falling across Mr. Patterson's legs. Last night Mr. Patterson was progressing as favourably as could be expected. In the course of their annual report tho directors of the Thorndon Bowling Club refer to tho resignation of the hon. treasurer, Mr. C. H. Mitford, who shortly proceeds to Auckland to take up his residence there. "The club." says the directors, "is under a debt of gratitude to Mr. Mitford for his able services as treasurer for some years past, and wo are sorry to part with him. We ... wish him every happiness and success in the future."
