REASONS FOR RULE AGAINST . SERVICE ABROAD. (Rec. March 28, 3.30 p.m.) Sydney, March 27. Senator Pcarco (Federal Defence Minister), interviewed respecting the possibility of relaxing the regulations debarring military officers of the Australian Permanent Staff from enlisting, said that the German Fleet was still in existence. We had no knowledge as to'how many ships might escape when the great conflict occurred, and could not spare officers of tho Permanent Staff for outside work. "No ono knows," said Mr. Pearce, "what the future may bring forth." Questioned regarding the location of the Australian Fleet, Mr. Pearce said: •"Tho ships are where they ought to be. Recent reports stato that they are in excellent condition, and that ilwir crews are especially well."
