SEATOUN TREAM SERVICE

" (To the Editor.) '.i Sir,—l was pleased to see your cor r respondent "Straphanger's" letter in to-day's Domtnion-. It is my unfortunate: lot! to be obliged to travel between Seatoun and Wellington several, times daily, and it has long l bean: a source of .wonder to me that the. residents of .Seatoun .and Miramar are content to suffer the disgraceful conditions frequently obtaining on the trams. The authorities know perfectly. well which particular cars are overcrowded _ every day and night, yet they make little or no effort to remedy- a state of affairs which is, without exaggeration; nothing short of a scandal. Times out of number I have seen Seatoim travellers prevented from boarding cars full of people going no further than Hataitai and Kilbirnie. fhii>|is particularly noticeable on the -cars i leaving Courtenay Place at 12.1, 1.1, 4.31, 5.1, end 5.3.1 p.m.; also on-the' ! last two Seatoun cars, leaving Courtenay Place at 10.31 and 10.46 p.m. It has been a common experience of mine to be left behind after the 10.31 has departed,-packed to the footboard with a seething mass of humanity, and then to have tho mortification of watching a procession of empty cars leaving for Newtown. Why 'has the, inspector at Courtenay. Place not the power to divert relief cars? Or, if he has the power,, why is it not exercised? On two .occasions, 'recently, when I have been wedged in a solid block of people on the centre platform, unabla to raise hand or foot, some filthy, individual has been violentjy sick'over those in his immediate vicinity; and every night I see ladies jostled and pushed in a manner which should not lie tolerated for a moment. There is an insane struggle ■to get on and off at every stoppingplace, because "passengers must enter and leave car at centre platform;" This is the only rule which is ever enforced; the more important one prohibiting smoking on the platform is flagrantly ignored, thus exposing one to the risk of .blindness by spark and ash. Tho conditions I have mentioned obtain on most nights, and on Saturday and holiday, nights they aro usually much worse. The worst overcrowding sometimes takes place on the 6.58 p.m. car, Seatoun to Wellington. This car is usually full when it arrives at Hataitai ; nevertheless, more passengers force their way in, quite regardless of the unfortunate persons at the back of the platform, who are pressed against the barrier and against one another in a manner which—in the case of sheep in a cattle-truck —should call for the intervention of the S.P.C. A. • Seatoun residents suffer also from other disabilities, snch as the lack of a theatre car, except on Saturday nights, and tho preposterous imposition of . a twopenny fare ; on' the borough lines on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. I hope these letters may do something in the direction of arousing public feeling in the matter.—l am, etc., : WORSER BAY. The latest scientific remedy for Coughs, Influenza, Colds, Broncnitis, Nasal Catarrh, Cold in the Head, or Sore Throats, is "NAZOL." Its virtue is that it cures. In bottles, price Is. 6<L—Adst, >
