TESTING THE 1915 B.S.A.

The B.S.A. Company is a great believer in. gaining first-hand information ooneorning the road conditions in the countries whefo B.S.A. motor-cycles ore used, and Mr. D. Y. Eennie, tho firm's travelling representative, was recently sent to New Zealand to spy out the land. Messrs. Adams, Ltd., planned a trip for Mr. Rennie which would demonstrate the difficulties that beset the New .Zealand motor cyclist in qnite a striking manner. With Mr. Q. B. Brown, Mr.. Hennie took a B.S.A. 4Jh.p. single-cylinder motoroycle three-speed countershaft gear (of course) and side-car from Christohurch through Arthur's Pass to Otira, Kumara, Mnrchison, Nelson,' Blenheim, Glenhopo, Seddon, Knikoura, Waiau, and Hanmer, 800 miles, all overland. The trip was a tough one, but tho B.S.A. and side-car (weighing' 80011). with passengers), came through magnificently. The capabilities of tho 3-speed gear wero fully demonstrated, and bo pleased wero Messrs. Adams, Ltd., with the result of this gruelling "try-out" that they cabled trebling their standing orders for B.S.A. motor-cycles. A small shipment has just arrived, and prospective purchasers should order early. Adams, Ltd.. Christchnrch, Palmorston North, and Wanganui. Agents: Sutherland and Ranltine, Wellington! Tourist Motor Co,, >-ttaatto£»,—AdYt,

At a recent meeting of the Wellington branch of the Public Service Association it was suggested that a Public Service Rifle Club should bo formed on. the, lines of those which oxist in someof tlie Australian States. The secretary, of tho association would be glad to receive any suggestions on the subject. ; A Press Association telegram from Dunedin states that on a charge of dynamiting fish in Waitati River, Edward Dormer was fined £5 and costs/ (£3). A smart shock of earthquake was experienced jn Masterton shortly aftetf noon on Saturday. War risks on contracts entered into by the City Council before the outbreak! of hostilities arc to be paid by tho council. Tho Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke)' stated last night that the total amount of such risks would not be a heavy item of extra expenditure. Donations to the zoological collection,' at Newtown have been received by the City Council as follows:—One Slater's crested penguin (Mr. M'Parland). two' blue penguins (Zoo Society), four hedgehogs (Mr. Haines, Mitchelltown), three dozen Japanese goldfish (Marine Department), four flightless ducks, and, one pair Hooke sea lions. The thanks' of the council has been extended to the* donors.

The Victorian State Service Federation has (says the "Public Service) resolved that kindred associations in Australia and New Zealand be written to suggesting that theyj make to the respective. Public Service Commissioner.; for the interchange of seven officers, one with each of the States, New Zealand, and the Commonwealth. At the last conference a resolution was carried affirming the desirability of tha a!:ove proposition, and the Australian Pubho Service organisations were communicated with on the subject, but so far as wo know there has not been any definite suggestion made as to the method of making the idea effective. We believe, however, that the benefits which will accrue to this Dominion by such interchange in the increased efficiency which would result from a knowledge of the methods of administration of the' Australian States will be readily ad-i mitted by the Public Service Commissioner, and that it is for him to decide 1 Upon some scheme of interchange. At the Convent of tho Sisters of the? Mission at Ellerslie on Saturday morning, the, jubilee of Mother Mary of' Nazareth, who was born at Waterford,, Ireland, and arrived in the Dominion thirty-eight years ago, was celebrated bySolemn Mass. The Rev. Father Torneyt conducted the service. Amongst those present were the Rev. Monsignor Brodier and Father O'Sulliyan, and many of the Sisters from the other convents in the district. At the conclusion of the Mass, states a northern paper, all present were entertained at breakfast by the RevFather Torney.

' Three bundles of notes, totalling a; considerable amount, and the proceeds of a property Bale, were left by a lady; on a chair at a Dargaville Theatre after a picture performance. The-fact that they were missing was not noticed until the lady arrived home. Early on Sunday morning the caretaker w»s interviewed, but he announced that he hadi (seen nothing of the missing treasure* As an afterthought, however, the carcx taker walked down the body of thai hall to the ohairs indicated, and there, sure enough, were the rolls, just aa I they had been left. , At the present time a considerabler business is being done in fat cattle, largely for export (says a Christchurch! paper), but dealers m this olass of stock have experienced considerable difficulty in getting their purchases slaughtered and frozen owing to the lack of facilities'at some of the local factories, ttj is stated that the Christchurch works can only deal with this class of stock in extremely small numbers, and • conse-> quently it is sometimes neoessary to keep animate waiting at the factory Jon several days before they are slaughtered,' In consequence of the lack of facilities in the northern part of Canterbury, dealers, in order .to h a ™ their stock slaughtered aa soon as possible, have: had recourse to sending their consignments to Pareora and Dunedin, where; drafts can be dealt with far more expeditiously than further north. Those fa the trade state that by the expenditure of a comparatively small amount of money greatly increased _accommoda-. tion could be provided. Hitherto the business done in the export of beef from! the South Island has been of mediocre, proportions, but there is a conviction in stock breeding circles that the trade which has now been inaugurated is likely to grow in magnitude, and than it would be a.good investment on the part of the freezing companies to catei for that class of business.
