CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

— 1>SUPPORT DELAY OF MOTOR BILL. A meeting of the Wellington Chamber <of Commerce was held yesterday. Mr. C. W. Jones presided, and there were present: Messrs. Jas. Macintosh, Geo. Shirtcliffo, Jas. M'Lellah, R. W. ■\Vaterhouse,'and T. Ballinger. A communication, was received from tho Employers'- Federation, with respect to the Motor Bill, and requesting that the' Chamber of Commerce should support an application to'delay the Bill till next session, to allow more consideration of its likely effect, especially on commercial vehicles.

It was decided that' the secretary should' write to tho Minister in charge of the Bill (the Hon. H. B. Bell) urging that it should-be held over. The Napier Chamber of Commerce forwarded a resolution they had carried in support of Mr. T. K. Sidoy's Daylight Saving Bill to be presented to Parliament:—lt was decided to write to. the Napier Chamber, expressing sympathy in the measure, .and suggesting that the matter should be made a remit to tho.next conference of Chambers of Commerce. '

The Canterbury Chamber of Commerce forwarded a copy of a letter they had sent to the Minister cf Agriculture directing his attention to the ifact that the sheep returns in the ordinary course 'were- not issued from the Government Printing Office till nearly the end of the year, when the information was so belated that it was not much use,to pastoralists. They suggested that a statement should be handed to the Press Association giving summarised totals; of each county to April 30, as compared with the totals for the corresponding year. The. Press Association would then .disseminate the useful information. through the Press of the Dominion. . • It was decided to support the Canterbury Chamber in their request. The Customs Department wrote that, in order to ( meet the growing demand for trade sfatistics.it was proposed to publish weekly- in the "Now Zealand Gazette" a return showing the total value of each of the twelve principal experts. These figures would be in addition to a complete monthly return. On the motion of the chairman it was decided to reply expressing satisfaction .at the proposal. A proposal' was received for the Chamber to become a member of the British Imperial Council of Commerce. —It was decided to join in the meantime, .and it.was suggested, that an endeavour should be again' made to form an Associated New Zealand Chamber of Commerce. A reply was received from the Post and Telegraph Department, in ' reference to a proposal to have new subscribers "to the telephone exchange advertised in the newspapers, stating that the expense would be too great', in proportion to the- benefit- to .bo derived. Space would be left, 'however, - at the end_ of each alphabetical list, for tho addition of new names. A letter was 'received from the General Manager of Railways'(Mr. E. H. Hiley) stating that the representations made respecting the rate charged for the conveyance of petroleum spirits on tho r railways would receive consideration when the revision of the. tariff was in hand. Tho Attorney-General (the Hon. A. L. Herdman) wrote in reply to the communications urging amendments to the Bankruptcy Act, 1908, stating that the matter would receive careful consideration.
