STATE CONTROL DEBATE.

On Saturday evening* before a largo audience the University Debating Society discussed the motion "That State Control is a. Solution. of tho Liquor Problem." Mr. P. B. Broad, LL.B., was in the chair, and Messrs. A. B. Si'evwrieht and A. E.Cnddick, M.A., moved the motion; while Messrs. W. J. M'Eldowncy and L. M. Moss, 8.A., opnoscd. The movers declared themselves as supporters of temperance reform, and ! regretted that during two decades of No-License and Prohibition '.agitation no real'temperance, progress had been made in New Zealand. The amount of ; liquor consume'; par head had in that time increased bv 25 per cent., and the convictions for drunl'tmicss lvd nearly doubled. It was high time there was an opportunity of trying a new. plan, and tlifct plan would bo found in- some form of Slate'control or in placing the trade under a Board of Commissioners, as had been suggested by the Hon. A. L. Hcrdman. The onposers argued that where State, control had been tried it had not operated with absolute succcss, and ,that Prohibition was the only remedy. Tlie Mr. C. E.
