NORTHLAND TRAMS.
IDEA TO SHORTEN THE ROUTE. A deputation from tho Northland Ratepayers' Association waited on t-lio Wellington City Council last evening, and asked that tho train route from tho city to Karori should bo shortened by taking a line from Moleswortii Street along Hill Street to Tinttkori Road. The cost, £3000 or £4000 would* according to Mr. L. A. George, who lieadejl tlie deputation, bo a mere bagatelle itt relation to tho saving _ which would_ he effected, and, in addition to the saving, ho said, there would be an increase ift the car revenue. Mr. H. Aston, who was the othef spokesman of the deputation!, said that tho new line would savo over a quarter of a milo on every trip, and, as there were 212 cars per day, the saving would be 53 miles, which, at lid. per car .mife, would amount to £2 9s, per day. Four minutes would bo saved on overy trip, which w«ul:l practically mean an increase of one in tho number of cars. Three stops per trip would be cut out, and thus in wear and tear £480 per year would be saved, which was equal to 115,200 passengers per year. The total apparent saving by the no* lino would be £1510 per year. The council referred tllo request to its Tramway Committee.
