A PITIFUL CASE.

Consequently lie was driven to this act in order to get away to seo his wifo, ivlio has since died.' 1 Such was tho pitiful tragedy told ") sentence by Ohief-Botectivo M Malion when a man, thirty-livo years of age, admitted a chargo in tho Police Court this morning that at Aratapu on February 18 ho obtained £3 Os. 6d. from Michael M'Greal by means .of a valucless chequo. "Tho man was in dire mental . s tress," continued the Chief-De-tefcive. "Ho was without monoy whon he got word that his wife was dying at Auckland, and ho had to raiso the money necessary to get to Auckland. He te tide red tho chequo to the landlord of tho place where ho was staying, and got it cashed. It was subsequently found that the cheque was valueless, but before tho issue of the warrant for his arrest became known to liim, he sent £1 to M'Greal and notified him that ho would make good the restiof the money as soon as ho could. Thero was nothing in tho nature of a previous offonce agaiust him, and his character was good." "Even a good end cannot justify a wrong act," commented Mr. Cutten, S.M., "but I supposo the man has been sufficiently punished by being brought hero. He will ho convicted, and ordered to come lip for sentence when called on, under condition that ho settles up the payment of the money."
