CORE OF THE EARTH.

SCIENTIFIC OPINION: AS RIGID AS

STEEL,

Scientists' engaged in research work at the University of Chicago, after a 6eries of lengthy experiments designed to discover the, nature of the earth's core, announce that the earth is more rigid than eteel, and cannot explode, or be destroyed l by fire, within itself. ■ ■ Professor Michelsou, head of the Department of Physics, states that the inside of the earth is not a fiery mass, but resists the idle force of the moon as if made of solid steel.' Despite this fact, the earth behaves as an elastic body, still subject to the same influences as the oceans, which form a part of it. The earth's solid surfaces are subject to the Bame ebb and flow as the tides of the ocean, but to a lesser extent.
