POLICE CASES,
PILFERINO IN A POST OFFICE. A youth named Albert Harbottle, seventeen years of age, pleaded guilty at the Magistrate's ' Court yesterday to a charge of having stolen a quantity of postage'stamps, valued at 205., tin? property of the Postmaster-General. New Zealand. Mr. D. 6. A. Cooper, S.M., heard the ease. Chief Detective Breberg stated that accused had been employed as a- messenger at the Kllbifnie Post Office. A number of thefts had occurred; in the post office, and the accused had admitted stealing stamps to tho value of £1. 'Iho accused, who was seventeen years of -age, had been dismissed from, the Service. After \Varning accused, the Magistrate convicted liim and ordered 'him to come 'up for sentence when called upon. DOLLY GA.UBETTA'S DEEDS. • Dolly Gambetta, a young w«man, pleaded guilty to a eliargo of having ystolon a quantity of jewellery, valued at. £15, tho property of 'Frances Mary Taylor. Police Inspector Hendrey stated that; i accused had been on friendly terms with | Mrs; Taylor for some time, One day accused < asked Mrs. Taylor for a lean of £30, stating that she had a brother in Australia who was about -to be tried for a capital offence, and that she needed the money urgently in order to havo her brother defended, After cb- ■ 'tabling as much Bioney_ as site could, ■ she had asked permission to go into Mrs. Taylor's bedroom to change liet ■ clothes. When she left tlixi room' Mrs. Taylor entered and found , a good deal of her jewellery missing. Tlio' offence took place on August 8, 1913, a)id it , was only recently that the ciiffio had been traced to Oamhetta. Mr. P. Jackson, whe appeared for accused, asked that she bo treated as a first offender. . The Magistrate remanded her. until Saturday for sentence. ' SERIOUS CHARGE. An old man named William Eitkey was chargcd with, ha-viisg assaulted a littlo girl aged 6 years. Chief Detective- Broberg conducted the prosecution. . Accused was not represented by counsel, , The;. Court was cleared during the hearing of tho evidence. At the conclusion accused pleaded not guilty and was committed to the Supreme Court for trial. MISCELLANEOUS CASES. Joseph Johnson, ail .o-W offender, was sent to gaol for seven days for steal' i'ng a pair of trousers, valued at 155.., tho property of Woolf Schwartz. Norman M'Plice wjvs fined £1 for ft, breach of his prohibition order, Tho breach took place on May 10, 1513, and, shortly aftorwards M'Plreo left New Zealand, and only recently returned. For insobriety Rose Eraser antl Mary 'Johnston we/o each fined. £1, ill .de* fault seven days' ijnprfsoii'mciit.. Twtj first offenders were convicted and discharged, i' . Jane Schaaro was fined .£1 for importuning.
