ON THE MOUNDS.

SPORT WITH THE RIFLE.

A BOISTEROUS DAY.

Tho stormy weather which prevailed on Saturday had tho effect of considerably reducing tho attendance of riflemen at Trentliam. Those enthusiasts wiio mado tho journey found, however, that conditions were not really so very bad as might reasonably have been expected from tho state of the weather m tho city. Tho wind was very tricky at times, varying from a southerly gale to tho gentlest of zephyrs. Still, it had tho virtuo of keeping in one direction to a great extent, and riflemen who watched it closely, and made correctly tho intricate calculations involved in tho scientiiio use of the windgauge, were not seriously troubled by it. Tliero have been many worse shooting days at Trent-haul. Tho Karori Club was disappointed in not being able to get off its Parliamentary match, owing to the occurrence of tho "stonewall" in the House. Jt is hoped that the match will be fired next Saturday. A sweepstake matcli was fired by the members of tho club, and in spite of the difficult conditions, some very good scores were registered. The prize for scratch men was won by President Marshall, who appears to have struck form early in tho season. The handicap prize went to Rifleman C. Bird, a new member who shows good promise. Tho Highland Club fired the first match of its first series—ten shots at 300 and 500 yds. The Saturday prize was won by Hilleman Morison, who put on the score of 86—80 "off tho rifio." The B class prizo was won by liifleman Shearer.

The Suburbs Rifle Club held a practice at Miramar at ranges 300 and 500 yards, seven shots at eacli range. Tho best score for tho day was made by Rifleman 11. Boon, his total being 65. Next Wednesday and Saturday afternoons, tho club will commence the championship series at ranges 300, SOO, and (jOO yards, seven shots at each range. A special trophy, presented by Mr. J. G. Newton (a telescope) will be fired for iu the opening match in the championship series. The trophies for the first series are: —A Class: JFirst prize, Mr. A. E.
