There has been no material alteration in the service for over twenty years, and passengers' from Auckland or Wellington by the Main Trunk expresses are obliged to wait at Marton Junction for fully two hours before being taken on to Wanganui by what is > now known as the "AVeary Willie" train. Lucas, who died last week, was one of Nelson's old Bottlers, having arrived hero from Melbourne, with her first husband, Mr. Hill, and two children, in 18G8. Shortly after arrival Mr. Hill died, and after a lapso of several years she married tho t late Mr. Charlos Lucas, of Blenheim, and resided in that town for some seventeen or eighteen years. Tho deceased was of a very kindly disposition, and will be re-, meinbered' by many. Tlio only surviving daughter is Mrs. Frank Moore, of Bridge Street. The man Sliaw, who attempted to commit suicide at tlio police gaol on Tuesday last by cutting his throat with tho handlo of a pannikin, is making satisfactory progress towards recovery at the hospital, and will probably be well enough to appear before the Court at the expiration of the remand. Up to tho present no trace has been discovered of a boy, Stanley Carter, who absconded from tho Stoke Industrial School on Monday last. /PAHIATUA. Friends of Mr. and Turs. G. Atkinson, of Ballanco, will regret to learn of tho death of their daughter Qucenie, which uccurred at a private hospital in Pahiatua on Friday, at the age of 13 years. Tho child underwent an operation for appendicitis a week ago. The Paliiatua and Eketahuna Bowling Club have successfully resisted the proposal of the Northern Bowling Association to include their clubs in tho AVairarapa centre. They, will now be included in the Manawatu Centre, which includes AVoodvillo. Among the many institutions which have been formed in the Pahiatua district during the past two years, several being within tho last few months, aro tiic following:—Progressive Association, Competitions Socioty, Contesting Association, Boxing Association, _ Motoring Company, Honorary Territorials Association, Defence Rifle Club, Gun Club, Glee Club, Swimming Club, Friendly Societies' Card Assemblies, Bible-in-Schools League, and Good Templars' Lodgo. At the present time movements are 011 foot to establish branches of the Women's Christian Temperance Union and tlio Thebsophical Society in Pahiatua. Several new businesses havo also sprung up during the period named, and the number of bankruptcies' do-, creased. A year has nearly passed sinco tho last'bankruptcy was registered in the town.
