OTAGO & VICTORIA COLLEGE* HONOURS YET EAST. Vdotoria College and Otago University commenced a cricket matoh on tho Basin Reserve yesterday afternoon, Tho play was rather dull, but so far it is fairly even. Victoria College went fa> the wiokets first, and withstood the attack of tho southerners for about Itwo hours and a half,,during which time thoy hit up'lsl. Dempsey and Birch opened the innings for the batting side, and A. W. Alloo and Tweedie' commenoed the attack. Dempsoy opened the scoring ac-. count with a boundary ofE Alloo. Birch faced Tweedio, and knocked a four off the seoond ball ho gtft, but four balls later he was clean bowled. Ono wickct was down for 8 runs. Howe followed, and, with Dempsoy, Bet up a fine partnership. With the score at 60 Dempsey had a life. He ran up tho pitch, _ and then rah back,' but Tweedie- let h'm off by returning tho ball to the wrong end. At 74 the pair were separated, Howe being clean bowled by Childs. The partnership yielded'6o. Without Itha score haying been added to, A. W. Alloo bowled Dempsey. With the exception of Dickson and Atmore the other batsmen did little. Dickson . went in fourth, and was still at tho crease when tho last gtand was mado. Ho played an uninteresting but useful innings. When stumps were drawn for the day Otago had lost four - wickets ■ for 101. Their play was far from bright. M'lntosh and Dickson bowled for tho Wellington team at the xomenoementi of the innings, and though- the batsmen seemed' uncomfortable, the wickets 'did not fall freely. Dempsey was put on, and off his first delivery A. W. Alloo was beautifully caught in the Blips by Howe. In the following over Dempsoy clean bowled Nugent, and his record was two wickets for 6 runs. A few minutes later, however, it was two for 17. R-eid knocked ten off 'him in two hits (a six and a four). The game will bo resumed at ten o'clock this morning.
