GROWTH OF VANCOUVER.

Harkness, of Wellington, who returned yesterday from a visit to Vancouver. "Home ten years ago the population of Vancouver was about 30,000 or 40,000, but to-day it is 150,000, and tie population is rapidly increasing," said Sir. Harkness. "Furthermore, there is every indication that Vancouver will continue- to grow rapidly." Mr. Harkness said the cost of living is high in Vancouver, and everything is much more expensive than in Now Zealand. House rents are high, and land in tho city brings from ,£IOOO to JCI2OO a foot. Many great improvement:! are being made in the city,, ono important work being a general reconstruction of the city's streets, a contract on which 4000 men are employed. When asked the reason for the rapid growth of Vancouver, Mr. Harkness said that tho city was the terminus of the Canadian-l'aciiic Raihyav, which, within the next twelve or eighteen months, it would probably bo connected with two new lines, the Canadian Northern Railway nndtho Grandv>Ti>uuk--Ricifie Railway. These three lines open up a great deal of country, and they will givo a great impetus to. business in Vancouver.
