LONDON LETTERS IN 28 DAYS.
A NEW KECORD. Tho s.s. Maraina, which arrived at Auckland from Vancouver mid way ports at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, had included in a large English and American mail letters which were posted in London only 2S days ago. This establishes a new record tor the time occupied in the transport of the mail 'between' London and New Zealand by the Canadian-Australasian Royal mail line. Five and a half days were occupied in crossing tho Atlantic to New York, the mails were held up for half a day in the United Stales city ior the through ei-pre.-s which delivered them in Vancouver in the creditable (imp of four days. Tho Mamma sailed on the day of receiving the consignment, and arrived at Auckland on Tuesday, after making the voyago down to Ne\\; Zealand in eighteen days. The Ma'vama had aboard on arrival f>2l bass of mails for New Zealand. Of these. 309 wore dealt with at Auckland, and tho remainder were, sent south by the Main Trunk express. The passage down from Vancouver was one of tho most pleasant yet' mado by the steamer, tho weather being fine and cool throughout. The passengers mado tho most of the entertainments provided and a sports committee arranged several fine programmes of games. Dances were held on the saloon deck nearly every evening, and a fancy dross ball, arranged for after leaving Suva., concluded the series.—Auckland ''Star."
