MASTERTON NOTES.

Masterton, August 2.Two bankruptcies have been recorded in the Wairarapa during the month of July, making six for the first seven months oi the year, as compared with twelve for the same period last year. Masterton itself has produced lioiib ot the insolvencies this year. Tho total rainfall registered in Masterton' for the month ending July 111 was exactly thirteen inches. This constitutes a record- for the district. At Mauriccville between sixteen and seventeen inches were registered. No trace has yet been found of the man Richardson, who disappeared from Alfredton some weeks back. It is feared that ho ■has lost his life in one of the streams in the district. Speaking of disappearances reminds one of tho fact that over twelve months has now elapsed siuco the young man Kingdon disappeared from Masterton, and not a trace of him has'been discovered. A young man disappeared from Akitio about the same time, and has not been heard of since. : Five old ago ponsions were issued in Masterton during tho month of July, and fifteen.renewals granted. ,

A committee was set up by the Borough Council this week to act with a committee of Upper Plain settlers and of the County Council in investigating and reporting upon the best means of safeguarding the town and district against floods. There is considered to be a possibility of the Waingawa River breaking its "embankments and submerging the district.

Tho Whyte-M'Kay Shield, which the Masterton Harriers won at Palinerston North last week, is to b& presented at a function to be held in the Foresters' Hal) next week. The Harriers held a successful run at To Ore Oro yesterday afternoon.

A mission was commenced hero this week in connection with the local branch of tho Salvation Army. Officers were present from Wellington, Pnlmerston, Dannevirke, and other parts. Commissioner Richards is to attend towards the end of the week.

The annual dinner of the Mosterton Firo Brigade was held at the Club Hotel ves-tt-rday. A number of visitors (including Inspector Hugo) were present.
