AN ENGLISH VISITOR.

MR. CHAS. ELLIOTT, F.S.I,

Among tho visitors at present in Wellington is Mr. Cbas. Elliott, F. 5.1., who for thirty-five years managed the estates of Mr. F. B. Mildmay, M.P. for the Totnes division of the Couutv of Devon. Mr. Elliott is travelling for tl'ie benefit of his health, and has spent tho last twelve months in South Australia, during which time he has made a study of the conditions, to see what are the "prospects there for English farmers and farm labourers. About ij. month ago the visitor crossed to New Zealand, and in the interim has been in tho South Island, observing things rural. In the past Mr. Elliott has made numerous visits to Canada, and he is the author of "A Trip to Canada and the North-AVcst," a book of travel published many years ago, with tho object of showing English emigrants the outlook in British America. While in South Australia he has gathered material for a similar book, which will be published on his return to the Old Country, in conjunction with special articles on cat-tle-breeding, and the possibilities of the sugar-beet industry.

Mr. Elliott takes a keen interest in cattle-breeding, particularly South Devon cross between the Jersey and North Devon, made about one hundred and twenty years ago. The advantage of the breed is that they possess all the milking properties of the Jersey and the beefing property Of tho North Devon cattle, and, moreover, are very domesticated and quiet. Since they were pedigreed about thirty-five years ago, a number have been sent to South Africa, while two years ago a Victorian, farmer imported eight heifers and two bulls. When in Australia, Mr.. Elliott learned (hat this latter lot were doing remarkably well. He considers they should do equally-well in this Dominion.
