In the Magistrate's Court a fortnight ago the following charge was brought by the. police against the International Investment Company, Ltd.: —

That, on January S, MIL', at Wellington, they did sell io one Harold Pctor.-en certain means, to wit, a premium bond issued by the municipality of the City uf Paris., by which permission was given to the said Harold Petersen to have an interest in a scheme by which prizes of money are gained by a mode of chance.

The judgment was delivered yesterday. At the hearing Mr. T. E. Neavo appeared for the pro.-ecution, and the defence was conducted by Sir Johu Findlay, K.C., and Mr. D. Stauley Smith. Mr. Neave stated that the proceedings were brought for the purpose of determining the legality of the International Investment Company in connection with this disposal of certain premium bonds. The information was laid under Section .11 (B) of the Gaming Act of IPOS, which stated:

Every person who sells i-r disposes of any tickets, or other mean/; by which permis.-ion or authority i.s gained or given to any person fo Lhroir for, compete, or liavo any interest in any such lottery or scheme, whether promoted in New Zealand or elsewhere, is liable to a fine not exceeding two hundred pounds, and, for any second offence, besides such fine, ,is liable to imprisonment for any. term not exceeding six mouths. '
