TRENTMAM, 1912.

« THE RIFLE CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING. HAPPY combination effected. "What has been done this year Is In the nature of a compromise," said Colonol I'. J. Collins, C.M.G., Chief Executive Officer of the Dominion Rifle Association, in handing our representative a copy of the official programme lor tho annual meeting of the Dominion Hide Association, which is to commence at Trenthain on February '28 next, concluding on -March 8. "General Godley and many of us are keen on improving "the programme oil military utilitarian lines, and as you will see on going through it, this lias been done, and at the samo time tho greater number of other matches iavourcd by marksmen have also been retained, so that 1 think it will give satisfaction to all concerned. At least I hope it will." . >m S 0I the meeting close on February 3. Iho total prizo list, exclusive of trophies, will amount to £1782; perhaps % little more, if the entries exceed thoso anticipated. Tho entry list, however, may suffer through old marksmen severing their connection with the dcienco forces consequent upon tho advent of tho territorial scheme of defence. In tho new programme, bull's-eye shooting is dispensed with for nil ranges under 800 yards. Military targets are to lie used in all service matches, and figure targets in tho Champion licit series up to COO yards. All match conditions have been revised, and as far as possible brought into lino with tho principle governing army riilo meetings, which have special regard to the conditions of active warfare. Thero will also lie a rearrangement of the rango stall', as tho Defence Department will detail many of its area-officers to do duty as range officers. As heretofore, Colonel Collins will have charge of tho meeting (for the last time, lie says), and will have the assistance of the old executive who have worked so harmoniously and successfully in past years. Tho idea of regimental teams selected under qualifications tests in their own districts will not Iks gone on with this year, as tho Territorial forcos will not have gone through their musketry course in time to enable competitions to be held locally in each district. , THE PROGRAMME REVIEWED." Tho "programme of compromise" is divided into three series—"A," the teams' scrvico matches; "li," llio individual service matchcs; and "C." tho Ballinger Bolt series, which is tho same as last year's championship porics—same matches, samo conditions, practically, and the samo honours, except that tho figure target is insisted upon at all ranges under 800 yards. Tho A series includes a Regimental Trams match (300, 500, and - COO yards, snap, rapid, and slow shooting)—a new match. At the' first range tho figure target is exposed for four seconds, and one shot of tho five is to be fired at each exposure. Ten rounds at a first-clasa target aro to be fired in .30 seconds at the 500 yards range, and five shots in 20 seconds at the 000 yards range. An "Observation and Mutual Assistance" match also figures on tho list —a contest at 300 and 800 yards. At the 300 yards range twelve regulation iron falling targets will bo used. Five rounds—two minutes' allow, ance for each competitor. At SRI yards th< figure 3 target is used. Fivo rounds—fout minutes' allowance. Then thero is a "Casualty" competition (a chattiomatch), at 300 yards, six rounds in tho preliminary, and ten in semi-final and final heatß. Tlie Sectional Firing Match, between 450 and 600 yards, five rounds' at each range, is similar to that which appeared in last year's programme. Tho Islington Competition (for a silver cup presented by tho Governor), is a new item. The teams are to bo fully equipped, in marching order, and are to march 11 miles ,or such distance as may be dccided on by tho executive, and finish up with nil attack on figuro targets placed at various distances on the range between GOO yards and tho butts. The Colonial Ammunition Cup Match is as in nrevious years. In tho "Superiority of IW competition, a new feature, tho distanco is 400 yards, tlio competitors fire five rounds at figuro targets,. one,,minute.' aUQived i ou ® target for each man firing round sandbag cover, and lowered when hit. After 10 seconds, three additional targets -.vill bo put up, and so oil successively. No further.; targets will be raised after 50 nor after a team lias- once knocked all its targets down. The team which lias the', fewest targets standing when their ammunition is finished, wins tho match. . Tho Teams Championship Match is similar to that held last year. , The "B" series—individual service matches—include a snap-shooting match: (seven shots at 300 yards), ns last your; an attack mateli (three shots each at 400, 300, and 200 yards ranges); a moving target match (seven sliots at 300 yards); a loophole cover match (ten shots at 400 yards). Rapid shooting (ton shots at 500 yards) is one of tho new matchcs. Timing • is'to be reckoned from the command "Fire." Before the command is given, ammunition may be placed in the bandolier or pouch or on the ground, but not held in the hand. Until the command is given 'the rifle chamber and magazine is to be empty, and at "safety," but tho cut-off may be out. Tho rifle should never have more than five rounds in the magazine, but nil error in re-charging a 'magazine boforc-it is empty, will not be penalised unless there is reason to presume intention. Also there is a new snap-shooting match, the "running man,' a "slow practice" competition (600 yds.), and the- service championship, nt 200, 500,'G00, and 800 yds. This event, is open to the fifty highest aggregate scorers in I iii the individual service matchcs already ' mentioned in "B" series. THE KING'S FRI7.E SERIES. The King's Prize series—the championship matches—is opoti to all members of the Europoan forces who have entered for and competed in B series. This is really last year's championship seriesAuckland Match (300 and 500 yds), Wellington Match (500 and 1100 yds), Canterbury Match (GOOyds.), Nelson Match (SOO - and 900 yds.), Otago Match (800 yds.), lfawke's Bay Match (000 yds.), Taranaki Match (1000 yds.), nil ten shots—culminating in the King's l'rizo Match nt 1000 yds. The prize money aggregates XllO in each of the championship matchcs, and .£l9B from the King's Prize Match, the premier honours of which nrc tho Ballinger Bolt, ..•.'SO, n gold medal, and gold badge. Other competitions inclndo tho Tronthani Aggregato (as last year), the Bislcy Aggregate (ns last year), tho Champion Team's Match (the distances nre chnnged to 300, 500, and 600, instead of 200, 500, and GOO, as last year), the United Service Match (Territorials y. Rillo Clubs), "Logan Campbell" Shield Match, twenty men aside. Colonel Collins states that it will cost a man .£3 lGs. to enter for every match— the samo amount as last year, lie wishes to point out that in the C series mutches there is no prohibition against the use of slings, aperture sights, or orthoptics.

Tho president of tho Society for l.ho Suppression of Unnecessary Noises, Mrs. Isaac L. Rice, of New York Cily, is an admirer of German railway#. Tho loud whistles formerly Used 011 these railway-.? have been suppressed, by order of tho Kaiser, without increasing accidents, and to the great advantage of travellers' nerves. Mrs. Rico, among oilier worthy objects, aims at the reform of the automobile horn. .
