EFFECT OF THE SYDNEY STRIKE. All calculation's on tho local fruit market haw baeu. upset by the strike in Sydney, and it is stated that soon be in-a gTO.ve position because without New South Wales fruit sucli as oranges, lemons, mandarins, passion fruit, and Eineapplos, it will, as one dealer puts it, ardly bo worth whilo keeping shops open. In any case it means a heavy loss to those engaged in the trade. It is stated .that Palnier'ston North will require from 500 to SOO cases of Australian fruit for show, we;'k (coiariipr.cing next Wednesday), and at present it looks as thong:* they 'will haTo te do without it. The only fruits available at present are Tasmaniau and 'Californian apples, and with the scarcity of other fruit theje are expected to reach extrcinely high mtcs. A small shipment of Caliiornian apples is duo early next week. Local merchants do not expect that this week's Sydney steamer will bring any fruit across. At yesterday's sales at the Blair and Allen Streets markets, pineapples from Raroton.'ra sold at 10s. to lis,, Tasmania]* apples, 13s. to lis. Gd.; Miidura lemons sold at 7s. Od. to 10s., South Australian 10s. to 10s. Local tomatoes brought Is. to i Is. 3d. per lb.; beans, sd. to Bd. per lb.; cucumbers, Id. to Bd. each; e.irrots, 55.; Thubarb. Is. to Gs. dozen; turnips, 3s. 6d. sad:,-cabbage?, 4s. to 7s. Gd.: green peas, 6s. to Bs. per bag of 8 pecksj'lethice, 33. 6d. to ss. case; radish, Sd. dozen; spring onions, 2d., 3d. dozen; new potatoes, Hd. to 2d. per lb.; asparag-us, 4tl. to Sd. bunch; old potatoes, is. to Is. Gd. per cwt.; Melbourns onions, 7s. Od. cwt.
