Mr. Will Thorne, Labour M.P. for West Ham Sonth, and some other Labour leaders urge the railway men to give tho Commission's recommendations a fair trial. The railway companies, in compliance with their pledges, are prepared to givo effect to tho Railway Strike Commission's recommendations, but say it will be impossible to carry them out without tho co-operation of tho men, whom they thought were similarly pledged. Hobhouse, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, speaking at Bristol, declared that until ttio railway companies and tho men decided what their action would be, the Government would not make any pronouncement on tho commission's report. The riotous proceedings during the recent strikes had led to a demand for the amendment of th» Trades Disputes Act with regard to peaceful picketing. Tho Government, however, considered the law strong enough to protect the individual, and therefore did not intend to amend it. MILL STRIKE AT HULL. London, October 26. Two thousand oil mill workers have struck at Hull, too masters demanding that unionists and non-unionists shall work together before they (tho masters) will consider a demand for increased wages.

SEAMEN'S WAGES INCREASED. ~,, ' London, October 26. As a result of tho lato strike at Cardiff, tho wages of the seamen have been increased by 30s. monthly. Tho Cardiff Seamen's Union, in reply to the owners' demand for reductions in wages, is applying for an advance to tho maximum rato of 110s. monthly fixed under tho recent agreement.

MINING STRIKE SETTLED. London, October 2G. A strike lasting twenty-two weeks nnd affecting twelve hundred Wigan minors I working in abnormal places has been ! settled. A joint committee has been formed to sottle future matters of dispute. THE INDUSTRIAL COUNCIL. London, October 2G. Mr. Sydney Buxton, President of tho Board of Trade, presided at tho first meeting of tho new Industrial Council. (Rec. October 27, 11.20 p.m.) London, October 27. Mr. Buxton announced that in addition to the Industrial Council he is creating a special Department under tho ' Chief Industrial Commissioner, through which the existing Board of Trado conciliation and arbitration powers will in future be exercised. SEAMEN'S UNION HEAD. London, October 26. Mr. J. Havelock Wilson, President of the National Sailors' and Firemen's Union, will sail by tho steamer Osterlcy for Austratia. THE NEWPORT TROUBLE. (Rec, October 27, 10.55 p.m.) London, October 27. | The Newport dockers arc submitting their dispute with Messrs. nonldcr Brothers to the Industrial Council before declaring n general strike of transport workers at tho Bristol Channel ports. Tho dockers at Swansea, acting in sympathy with tho Newport dockers, have refused to work tho Hornby Grange. Messrs. Holder Bros, sought to pay tho dockers day rate terms for working their steamer nornby Grango, tho men demanding tonnage rates. The samo firm had a lengthy fight with the Newport dockers last year.
