An, alarm of fire was given at 5.30 evening, raid the brigade was quieklv on the scene, but it turned out that a tradesman in Main Street East was burning rubbish insid* his building. Mo«iTs. W. Amen, B. Grav, 11. H. Hunt, G. Kendall, G. H. Low,'Jas. Tcinant, and W. J. Thompson have been returned unopposed as members of the Oroua Drainage Board. There v.-as a large attendance last evening- at a meeting of those interested in Ihe formation of a Young Men's Social Club, the pothering including a number of ladies. The Mayor (Mr. 'J. A. NVh) presided, and detailed the history of the Men's Free Club as organised bv Miss Glondinning. He stated that the institution had filled such a want that if had been found imperative to acquire new premises. After discussing the matter ver.v fully, a. committee iyas set up to I meet a committee of members to conI sider how best to raise funds for exI tension. The local branch of the Laymen's Missionary Movement entertained a lareo gathering at supner last evening, Mr. J. Wallace presiding-. The chairman explained the aims of the movement, lur. Allen, of Wellington, who made a tour of Canada and the United Slates recently, gave an interesting: address on the work that is being done by the Laymen's Mission. The council of the Palmerston Chamber of Commerce met last evening, the president (Captain flaydon) being in the chair. The Wellington Chamber wrote asking for support in an endeavour to secure an amendment in the Arbitration Act with reference to the registration of unions. It was decided to support the Wellington Chamber. It was also resolved to support the same chamber in an endeavour to induce ihe Railway Department to book parcels right tlironsrh to any destination in the Dominion. The chairman reported that there had not been any contributions to the Tavlor memorial, and that the list had been'returned to Christchurch. A motion was passed regretting that the poll recently taken to raise money to carry out certain public works had been rejected, and the councii pledged itself to support another proposal in the same direction if brought forward by the Borough Council. Some discussion took place on the inconvenience to tho public arising from the manner in which holidays were observed in public oilices, but' action was postponed till next mooting. A communication was received from the Postal Department stating (hat it could not entertain tho suggestion to make bureau connections with the telephone "urgent" on payment of an extra fees. All bureau connections were already treated as urgent.. Bro. G. Marshall presided over tho quarterly meeting of the Oroua Lodge of Druids last evening. Two new members were- iditiated, and votes of condolence were passed to tho relatives of the victims of the Foxton tragedy. It was resolved to inform the I'riendly Societies' Council that the lodge was iii favour of continuing tho friendly societies' Sunday services. Members of the Manawatu Ladies" Golf Ciub held a stroke competition at the llokowhitu Links yesterday afternoon lor trophies pi evented by Mrs. Warburtou. An exhibition of gymnastics was given last evening by members of the Palmerston Gymnasium Club. The instructor, Mr. C. P. Allen, was in charge, and the display was a good one. A" complimentary concert was tendered at tho Opera House lust njg-ht to Miss Thelma Peterson, who is about to visit England with the object of having u,r voice trained. There was a very- r«ir audience, and Miss Potc-rson's numbers were greatly appreciated; in fact, tho audience was most appreciative all through, and the contributions of a number of iocal amateurs wero well received. The Palmerston Brass Baud rendered a programme of music in the rotunda in the Square last night. A large crowd of people assembled and greatly'enjoyed the music. The Palmerston Tennis Club's courts are to be opened on November 4.
