G. B. Munro, (j ( in a short address outlined tho history t u of the institution, and mentioned that tho sum of .f.348.5 left by Mr. James Les- e< lie for the establishment and mainten- m anco of an orphan home had been wclj p a employed. Until recently the trustees t!i had "hoarded out" the orphans, paying for their support out of the interest of ji the capital invested. But Mrs. Birrell, tu of Mount Eden, had bequeathed .CIOOO to Ai the Leslie Orphanage, and Mrs. Knox had np given .£SOO towards the institution, and oil the trustees considered the time had arrived when the orphanage should bo brought into existence. Hence the present buildings. The trustees had decided that the sum of .£IOO should be the endowment for a cot, and four cots had been so endowed. (Applause.) There were three children in the institution al- ' though it had not been officially opened, an and numerous applications had been re- m; ccived for the admission of other orphans bs so that ere long, all the available accom- M modation would be made use of. ve Captain AV. Crater gave a detailed to statement of the finances of the.orphan- in; age, and intimated that the cost of its wi upkeep would probably bo between £SOO va and ,£7OO per annum. is. The Mayor, in declaring the orphanage so open, expressed the hope that the institution would receive the support of the public which it so well merited, as it '1 was a lasting appeal to every man and M woman in the community, for the caro of M little children should lie tho care of every < member of tho community. ~ Tho Rev, Isaac Jolly briefly spoke on <! tho question of tho sacredness of child- ft, hood, and exhorted his hearers to care if for tho iittio ones and do all that was l possible to render their temporal and _< spiritual conditions what thev should be or! lhe collection amounted to"X3S 12s.
