GKIFFIN DEFEATS MURPHY. Tho principal event at (be Northern ]3o.\ing Association's Dominion Day carnival was the meeting of B. Murphy, of Auckland, and Jack Griffin, of , Greymouth, in a 15-round professional contest, the prize being a purse of .£SO. The bout was won by Griffin, who was nearly out in the third round, but made a great recovery. Murphy, after being saved bv tho gong in tho fifth round, cried enough early in the sixth round.
I . Murphv scaled !)st. 101b., and Griffin also made 9st..' 101b.' Tho men wcro verv [ evenly matched in physique, and both , looked in good condition. The first round saw Murphy connect a right swing, and Griffin went down and took a rest for several seconds. Murphv also had the best of the second round, in which there was a lot of holding and talking. Murphy started the third round well, sending in a good left, to which Griffin replied with a similar delivery. Murphv was getting tho best of matters, and ■ Griffin went down, partly thrown. He , was almost out, but by hanging on and : stopping well, recovered, and beforo the. • round ended had Murphy in a bad way. I Ho received a great ovation when corners ! sounded. Murphy came back revived, ', and the fourth round saw some hard , slogging, in which both scored. Tho fifth , round was tho beginning of the end. I Griffin 'scored all the way, and Murphy i hung on most of tho timo' and was boing ! counted out when the gong saved him. i Early in the sixth round Murphy stagi gored out of a mix-up to his corner and ; held up his hand to show he had enough. Tho contest was thus won by Griffin. A. Pooley, heavy-weight chamnion of Auckland, beat Glou Barclay, champion of the King Country, on points, in a sixround bout, and P. Holt, champion mid-dle-weight of Auckland, beat ,1. Kronast, of Auckland, after a very exciting contest. The decision was received with considerable dissent. A bantam tourney, which attracted five entries, was won by Gilchrist,
