A WANGANUI BILL. Tho House of Representatives me£ at 2.30 p.m. _ ' - The Wanganui Harbour District and Empowering Bill was introduced by Mr. Hogan, rend a first time, and referred to the Local Bills Committee. RAILWAY EXTENSION. Mr. W. D. S. MACDONALD (Bay of Plenty) moved'"That a special committee be appointed to inquire into tho petition of the Taupo Totara Company for railway extension, and any other matter iu connection - therewith; such committee to have power to call for persons and' papers; three to bo a quorum; the committee to consist of Messrs. Davey, Forbes, Fraser, Grcenslade, Guthrie, • Mander, Mvers. Newman, Reed, and the mover." Mr. A. M. MYERS (Auckland East) seconded tho motion. Mr. L. M. ISITT (Christchurch North) said ho thought insufficient information had been given to the House about the matter. He did not know what was included under "and any other matter in connection therewith." .He had heard that one of the things included under that likul was the giving to tho company power to purchase 200,000 acres of Native land. Was that so? Mr. Macdonald: Yes. Mr. Isitt: For to those of us who think that it is an iniquity to part with a single acre of the land set apart for the Maori people, it seems a wrong thing that a committee should bo set up to consider anything of the kind. The motion was carried. TARANAKI OIL, Tho following motion by Mr. H. J. H. Okey (Taranaki) was carried unopposed:— "That there be laid beforo this House the report of Mr. Clarke, of the Geological Survey Department, made during this year, upon the petroleum industry in the Taranaki district."
