Tho police have not yet been ablo to ascertain the whereabouts of tho young mail, James Kingdon, who has been missing from his homo sinc« Monday, Jnly -4In informal ion given to tho police, it is alleged that ICingdon, in company with tliree other men, had been in Carterton on July 21, and had returned in the evening in a cab. Ono of the occupants of tho vehicle was put down at his residence, and tho other three, including Kingdon, were driven to tho house of one oi' tho men. His companions state that Kingdon got out of tho cab, and was last seen going along Dixon Street in the direction of his home, the hour Ijoing between eleven and twelve o'clock. All sorts of rumours in regard to the missing man's whereabouts are in circulation, but nono with any foundation capable of being verified. The police authorities in Wellington havo mado inquiries as to whether Kingdon had been seen in the city, but their efforts so far have proved fruitless. It is alleged that tho men had a dispute in Carterton, and in their statements to tho police the other two men say that though Kingdon was in a quarrelsome mcoil, and had struck them, they did not retaliate. The cab-driver at first refused," but this morning agreed, to sign n statement in connection with the matter, and therein says that ho left the three men in Dixon Street. Tho police have been investigating tho matter, and havo been diligent in their search for Kingdon, but so far' without success. UNREGISTERED NURSES, Christchurch, August 2. At an inquest .in the hospital this morning concerning the death of Lena Buchanan, aged 22, married, a verdict was returned that death was due to septicaemia., following child-birth. The medical evidence was to the effect that the case was an extremely bad one, but tile doctors could not say where tho infection cauie from. The nurse who attended tho patient was unregistered. She was positive she took all tho necessary precautions. It was suggested that as two people had died in the same house tho building might contain disease germs. The Coroner remarked that an unregistered nurse ran a great risk in undertaking such a case. (Jne doctor, in his evidence, said there were hundreds of unregistered women practising asmidwives in Christchurch. SUMNER-HEATHCOTE CANAL, Christchurch, August 2. At last month's meeting of the Lyttelton Harbour Hoard the late Mr. 'T. E. Taylor gave notico of motion to the effect that the ■ commercial aspect of the proposed Sumner-lleathcote canal bo investigated hud reported on by two or more competent New Zealand harboftr authorities. At to-day's meeting, after discussion, and on the suggestion of the chairman, it was decided to consider the following proposal, at next meeting of the board:—"As a matter of policy, and out of respect to the memory of our late colleague, Mr. T. B. Taylor, this board resolves as follows: (1) That a commission lie set up to investigate and-report on the soundness or otherwise of the findings in the majority and minority reports of the Special Committee appointed to investigate and report on tho financial aspect of a canal to Heathcote. and other propositions for harbour extensions. (2) That the commission have power to take evidence and call for all documents in the possession oi the board and relating to the canal scheme. (3) That the cost of such further investigation 1m paid by the board, and tho commissioners or majority of such commissioners' reports be final. (1) Tliri tho gentlemen constituting such commission bo (left blank), and that in case anv of them bo unable to act the chairman, | Messrs. Dougall and Laurenson have.power to appoint substitutes." Mr/ Baeyertz, tho judge, eulogised the competitors generally on the marked improvement since last year, both in elocution and general'aptitude to learu. There are 320 entries.
