ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
PREMATURE EXPLOSION. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Nelson, August 2. By an accidental explosion of gelignite at a claybank cutting ton miles' from Murchison, W. Sewell and David Sewell woro seriously injured. William Sewell was ramming home the last plug while David was preparing another when the tamping stick was blown into W. Scwoll's face and body, making largo wounds. No details aro available as to tho present condition of the sufferers. JOHN LAWRENCE'S DEATH. Yesterday Dr. M'Arthur, S.M., held au inquiry into the death of John Lawrence, who was found yesterday in Edinburgh Terrace, with his throat cut. • Thomas David Bryant, expressman, of 17 Edinburgh Tcrraco, gave evidence that at about 4.25 a.m.. on Tuesday ho heard something moaning outside his window. Ho went out and found deceased. Ho struck a match and remarked; "My word, man, you seem to be in a vevy bad way." Deceased just looked at him and moaned. iWitness could see the injury -inflicted, and ho rang up the police. When ho returned tho man was dead. Alexander Russell, dairyman, 102 Russell Terrace, said that ho had met deceased in Russell Terrace afr about 4.15 a.m. on Tuesday. Deceased 'just said: "Bonlcott Street?" Witness said: "You are on tho wrong Toad," and redirected him. Deceased added that he 'lived in 33 'Boulcott Street. He,seemed hardly in his right senses. '. Constablo John Willitts, of Wellington South, said that when he '-reached the 'scene tho man was dead. ,He described other matters. The verdict was one of death by suicide whilst temporarily insane. A CUBA STREET SENSATION. A", man whose name is supposed to be Patrick Hayden was admitted to the hospital last last night, suffering from what I is alleged to be a self-inflicted wound in the abdomen. It is stated that ho stabbed himself with a pocket-knife in the .doorway ,of a. tobacconist shop in Cuba 'Street at about'l.so'o'clock last evening, and then staggered out into tho roadway. He was picked up by a, couple of young men, who, supposing him to be drunk, helped him along until Vivian Street was reached. He then collapsed, and a medical man was summoned, who ordered his removal to the hospital. At a lato hour last night it was understood that tho man's condition was critical. Hayden, who has only been in AVcllington about four weeks, belongs to Horipito, where, it is stated, he was. known as Patrick Jamicson. Ho is about 33 years of age, and his wife resides «t' Napier.
