Sutciiil'o recited "Queen Katherine's Defence"; Mr. H. L. Jiicholls and Air. W. R. Bock read the quarrel scene from "Julius Caesar"; Air. J. Carr sang "O Alistress Aline" ("Twelfth Might"); and Mrs. Sutcliffe concluded the progi'amme with tho epilogue from "As You Like It." Supper, under the management of Airs. Baldwin, Miss Holmes, and Aliss Van Stavcren, was served, and tho evening ended after some excellent Caruso gramaphone records, sent from the Dresden Company, had been given. A rather quaint and pretty idea had beeu carried out in regard to the programmes, every item having placed beneath it an appropriate Shakespearean quotation. Gregg Hockey Club Dance. The fourth annual dance of the Gregg Hockey Club was given in the Concert Chamber of the Town Hall last evening, and was a very enjoyable affair. A great amount of trouble had been taken with tho decorations, with the result that the chamber has seldom looked so pretty a 9 it did last night. . A frieze of lycopodium had been carried all round the walls, and red shades, embowered with lycopodium, covered the electric lights. From the central chandelier light ropes of lycopodium, dotted with scarlet poppies,, had been carried with bell-like effect to the sides of the room, and festoons of tho same effective creeper had been looped on the front of the gallery, the pillars also being almost hidden with it. The front of tho stage had been covered with dark green, and with trails of foliage, while at .the sides, wero arch-like effects of foliage, and blue and scarlet poppies. The whole appearance of the decorations was light and graceful-lcoking. Supper was laid at one end of the corridor, the tables being effectively arranged with white and yellow narcissi, and a witlo band on each table of scarlet ribbon crossing diagonally from corner to corner. The supper arrangements were in the hands of Air. J. Gedber. Among tho'se present were Airs. F. Af. li. Fisher (chaperon), fearing white satin with an overdress of ninon and bodice of exquisite lace; Aliss Ward, yellow satin with an overdress of (jold embroidered net; Miss Al'Grath, white chiffon taffetas with handsome embroideries:. Aliss O'Neill, pale blue channelise satin: Miss Hibbard, cream charmeuse frcck with jewelled embroidery; Aliss Tregea, white charmeuse satin with pearl trimmin?: Aliss Eevell, pale pink frock; Aliss AlacLVan, black velvet with point lace berthe; Aliss Nathan,' black velvet with oriental embroideries: AHrs Hill, white silk with jewelled net; Aliss Pickering, black velvet with white lace; Aliss Rapley, blue nincn with embroideries; Aliss Wilson, white satin veiled with white net: Aliss Cairn cron, white silk; Aliss Heady, emerald velvet; Aliss Smith, white cbarmoiirc satin; Aliss Pitt, cream charmeuse; Aliss Nathan; white charmeuse with tunic dress of embroidered ninon bordered with fringe. There were also present: Alessrs. Railev, Benge, Bennington, Hankins. Krcbs, Lawrciice, Schulenberg, Smith, and I Tinney, ■ all members of the committee. Air. S.- J. Smith was secretary.

Mrs. Godley left for the south last evening. Mrs. J. Sinclair (Dunedin) aid her daughter, who have been visiting Australia, ' returned by the Sydney boat yesterday. The fortnightly meeting of Our Girls' Branch of the Victoria League was held nn Monday, Mrs. Corliss nresidin?! A very interesting paper on "Modern Home" was read bv Miss Kane, and the members also, contributed brief papers on great men in Roman history. At the nest meetins tho topic.of the evening will bo "Modern Humourists." A display of Coronation and other pictures is to be given in tho Town Hall on Friday evening to celebrate the anniversary of the Y.W.C.A. Her Excellency Lady Islington has announced her intention of being present. Miss Margaret Byrne, of Takaka, Nelson, ha 3 returned home after visiting friends in Wellington. This afternoon the Young Women's Guild of St. John's Church will hold their biennial sale in the Dison Street Uall. The sale will be opened by Mr. J. G. W. Aitken at 3 p.m., and will be continued lit tho evening, and on Friday afternoon and evening. Besides the fancy work, produce, flower, sweets, and refreshment stalls provided by tho guild there will be a plain wc-rk stall provided by the Ladies' Dorcas Society,. and a Junior C.E. stall, which will contain articles calculated to attract juvenile purchasers. In the evenings concerts and side-shows will be provided by the young men and women of the Bible Classes. Tho object of the sale is to provide scholarships for the Maori Girls' School at Turakina, which is an institution meriting the support of all who have the betterment of the Maori people at heart. Any surplus will be devoted to medical mission work.

A Civil Service ball, which function has not been held for many years, takes place in the Concert Chamber of the Town Hall on Wednesday, August 9.
