Trentham: Events the Frocks. His Excellency the Governor and Lady Islington honoured tho Racing Club with their presence at Trentham on Saturday. They, arrived before the first race, and remained..till lVto in the afternoon.'- The president, Mr. J. B. Harcourt, and his daughtes', Mrs. Gillui, received them and ascorted them to tho vice-regal box. Miss Cotton accompanied Lady islingtoirand Mr. and Mrs. Guise and Mr. and Lady - Beatrice Kerr-Clarko also attended. MajorGeneral Godlcy and Mrs. Godlcy, Sir Joseph and.Lady. Ward, and tho. Hon. Dr. findlay were visitors. The day, with the exception of tho usual gusts ot wind, was periect for racing, and tho bright sunshine- brought out ' the prettiest., of frocks. White was very much worn, and it was really wonderful to sco how many styles-whito muslin and ■ lace ■ will lend itself to. Ninon was used for many lovely gov.-ns, usjially over a contrasting colour, anil often veiling the entire robe, trirn- ' ming and all. fringo,- which has been trying to become fashionable for the past two years, made its appearance on a number of gowns and even coats. One of these, ot ribbed tussore, long and straight, nnd braided in self-colour, -was. .finished with fringe nuite eight inches long. Lady Islington woro a rtibe of Indian lawn, very finely embroidered. A black sash finished tho high , waist, and her. ■wide black hat-had-a crown of grebe, and was trimmed with a white bird. . Miss Stapleton Cotton was also in white muslin, with a large black hat, almost covered with spreading white wings. • Lady Beatricq Clarlte was in . mole col ; oured charmeuse, made en princess, and finished at the back with a cross-over pleat. Her straw hat was of amethyst colour, trimmed with grey wings. Mrs. Guise was in a purple' costume, with very straight" coat" and short skirt, and n sioall close-fitting, turban toque oi'. the same, finished with a brush osprey. Millar), woro pale pink sillt, .trimmed with lace, and.a black hat, wreathed with pink roses. Mrs. Wilford was in rather blue tussore,' and a black hat, tied under the cliin with black ribbon. Mrs. Whyte wore a lovely gown of grey green silk, with wide bands of crcam lace, and finished with trimming of narrowblack velvet. Her black hat had a; large bow of pale blue tulle, veiled in black net, and of-small pink.roses. Mrs. Elgar's white muslin robe was inlet with very fine lace, nppliquod with a coarser kind, and her largo black hat had tlireo palo pink plumes sweeping across the-crown, and.fastened in .front .lyith-a knot of nink roses., Mrs. C" Bidwill woro finely black spotted grey foulard, trimmed with narrow "black velvet, and a black - hat with lace and bunch of cream roses. Mrs. Tweed wore,black spotted- tulle, over whito silk, and a black hat,, with band and aigretto of blue. Mrq. Burnes was ,in a gown of sapphire blue oharmOuso, with an overdress of black net, inlet with fine lace, and finished with silk fringe. Her black hat was trimmed with a sweeping blue plume. Mrs, Bateson wore one of the soft ninon gov.-ns, over a contrasting colour. Hers -was a dove grey, over pale pink silk. Side panel? of cream laco were let in .the skirt,, which was finished with beautiful oriental trimming'in gold and colours. Tho bodice had a-yoko of lace, outlined with the same trimming, and her grey hat had ostrich tips and a wreath of tiny pink roses. _ ■ Mrs. K. Tringham was in white muslin, and a black lint trimmed with pale blue. Mrs. Herbert had cream crystalline, illlet with fine lace, and n largo hat of lobelia blue, trimmed with tulle and ospreys. Mis. Heading's gown of white muslin was- appliqued with motifs of Irish crochet lace, nnd finished with satin bands. . .Mrs. Kciuberworo deep blue charmeuse, with cream Into nnd oriental, trimming,, and a hat to match. Miss Kembcr was. in 'orchid-patterned muslin, trimmed . with' mauve, and straw hat with pansies. Mrs. Arthur Duncan wore grey spotted foulard, the tailed coat finished with tassels, and collar of. pink velvet. Jler grey hat was trimmed witli pink roses. Mrs. Algar Williams had a lovely gown of . white chiffon, hand-painted; in very soft tones, and tho skirt drawn into a deep hem of whito satin, and a black hat with pink rpscs. Miss Bovle (Christchurch) woro grev ninon, and n big black hat, trimmed with n whito laco bow. Miss Hislop wore pale bluo tussore, and a black hat. Mrs. V. Kiddiford, soft mauvo ninon and lace, nnd a tagel straw hat, trinimed with nale pink roses. Mrs. Dymoclc wore nattier blue voile, with trimming to harmonise, and a black har, trimmed with blue. Mrs. .V. Rcid woro a coat and- slcirt of. cream cloth, edged .with military braid, and hat surrounded by large red velvet poppies and wheat ears. Sliss Cooper was iii an oyster coloured costume, and blnck hat witli whito roses. Mrs. licid woro a coat and skirt of ■natural-Coloured shantung, with facings of Paisley eilk, and large cord buttons, and a hat of cornflower -blue. \-Miss Williams was in cream crystalline, and a largo bluo plumed hat. Mrs. Joseph had a fawn coat and skirt, finished with black. Miss Joseph wore a navy foulard dress, and hat trimmed with red and whito poppies. MiSs Anson wore pale bluo ninon, and hat with pink roses. Mrs. Rathbone, amethyst silk, and hat to match. ; Miss Measures (England), a striped tweed coat and skirt, and small ljeehivo toque of fur. . Mrs. J. Clark had a pale blue costume, the long coat finely braided, and a hat trimmed with black tullo and roses. Harris, Lower Hutt. The Star Boating Club are holding their annual swimming sports next Saturday. Mrs. E. Powell, Haveloek, with her daughter, Mrs. E. Wiffeu,' Blenheim, and Mr. W. H. Powell, are spending ft fewdays in Wellington. Miss V. Murdoch, of Lake Wanaka, who has been the guest of Mrs. Powell, and the Misses Mills, of, Wellington, have been spending holidays' with iriends in 1 Haveloek.
