NOTES ON THE RACING.

After the withdrawal of Whitestone, S W„lts re^ in Trcntham Welter. Kill, with. Oliver in the saddle, ? a& . made /avourito,.and Bracken was next . in uemand. Backers had summed up the * position correctly, for Rill was always iu a goad position, and was the first to roach the post though she had to be •' ridden in the last half-furlong to beat Lr.iua by a neck. Rill h as now s t ar fo(j •oil twelve occasions this season, and has only been once unplaced. Saturday's win r''\ S „tl!r r f In , suc « ssi °n. and makes a total, of seven tor the season. Of the other candidates, Laius looked rerv well and finished very gamely. Bracken was a trifle disappointing, for, though ho cot near the front at one stage, he never looked like winning. Esmeh, own sister to lumnt and Idiius, showed plenty of pace for six furlongs, and promises to prove useful. , In tho.Anniversary Welter 'Handicap, Falsetto was favourite, but penza, First > Battery, and Ariom were all well backed ' lor about five furlongs the favourite showed plenty of pace, but after that sha ' was done with, and drifted right back to las.'-position. The finish resulted in ir B ln- stF'SS IO between. Ariom: and Medallist ror the whole length of the straight. Medallist- headed the mare "at ? n « s tage, but ■ Ariom came again, and ' ]Ust won h ( y half a head, Deeley riding a, great.finish. On recent, form, both Ariom and Medallist ought to have had a good deal more support than was accorded them. ,™" uce i the ■ field for tha iMcctric Handicap to seven runners, a good deal of interest being taken away irom the race by tho defection of Gipsy Belle and Ofcono.. In such a weak field, Sunburnt, on his best form, seemed a •' certain winner, but, as .he has proved unreliable m the past, ' backers selected lenterhooK as favourite* and Sunburnt ao .next bes.. Backers of the favourite were without hope from .the start, as.Tenter-.. liook was badly left, and never got amongthe leaders. St. Toney was quickest to begin, and had a good lead into' tho straight, but, before tho distance wa9 reached, Sunburnt could be seen corain** very fast. The race was then , all ove£ * for bunburnt passed St. Toney with : scarcely an effort, and then won pulling up. Had the Multiform colt been in tho ielegraph Handicap later in . the day ha must have given a good account of himself, as ho appeared, to be in his best mood. All tho acccptors faced the "starter in tho riurseiy Handicap, for which Counterfeit, own sister to Miss Mischief, was made favourite. The filly was making her first appearance in a race, and did not meet with the best of luck, but «he demonstrated her quality by a lightnin* \ rush at tho finish, and apparently got into second place,,but the judge decided, however, that she was unplaced. After" the numbers went up they were haulod .down .for., a second,-but went up agaia unchanged.- The.-.winner proved to ba Bronze, who was easily tho best-condi- • tioned youngster in the race. Had Oliver not secured a rua on the rails the filly . would probably have had "tinia to go • round tho outside and win, but it would have been a close call. Ka'ngiahia show- ' ed a great turn of speed. in th£ first few furlongs, and, of the others, Byron,. St. Petersburg,. Golden Ball, and Bootla all ran' very well, though the last-named did not exhibit the 6ame dash as'in'tho Spring.

As was generally expected, Miss Mis. s chief was a firm favourite for the Cup • throughout th 6 betting operations, and as Lady R-eina was bracketed with her on the machine the combination, carried a great deal more money than the' SEcond favourite, Los Angeles. The favourite was in the pink of condition, and no fault could be found. with the others, of whom Parable, 'Iranui, and Lady Keina | looked very fit indeed. Goldfinder seemed as though he. had almost had enough rao ing, and in the race- he did not show up. Los Angeles was in -a-latherbefora he left the .bird-cage, and neither he nor . Vi wasfojiven preliminaries. Following a good "staff," a very pretty race took place, resulting in as brilliant a - finish -as has been seen at Trentham. The winner was"* never actually 'in. front..until the last • stride; It was in the last furlong that , 5 'the excitement became greatest.. ;Iranui ;came into the lead . soon after; entering* the straight, and as 6he .was going well, . with the. favourite- in .fourth'. I position,,:, some lengths away,. the race. appeared to be oil over. Mis 9 Mischief was being hard ridden then, and her backers gasped as they saw her run in from the whip. Her chance then appeared tff be'hopeless, I but Gray straightened her in an instant, • and then began to ride as 'if his very.' life depended on the issue. .Fifty yards j ' from the post Iranui was. still winning ■ , comfortably, but in another ,20 - yards, . Miss Mischief had reduced the-gap, and was .on Iranui's quarters. Then, with! one mighty stride, she was almost level, ' and as, she, left the ground again 6he was. i at the post, with hex head in front. i Never before at Trentham'did.:such'a handful of horseflesh make up N . so much ground in. so short , a distance. Some went .so far as' to regard it. as a luckji victory,-but, if the. race were run again* '• Miss Mischief would repeat the victory. ' Ryan, on Iranui, appeared to think that ■ he had the race won, buji even'so the - ' favourite's win is still a meritorious one,,. Considering. the ground that she had to ' mako up after swerving. The official time for different distances was—s fur- , longs, 'in, lmin.. 'lsec.;-Y8 fur. longs, lmin. 15 4-ssec.; 1 mile, lmin; 41sec.; 1 mile and a quarter, 2min. lOsec.; v full distance, 2min. 34 2-ssec. . The full i time suggests that the mile and a quarter was run slightly faster, than stated, ' and this may be so as it'is difficult to ' pick up the post with the horses-coming J" straight towards the stands. ■ Ivilosteri was favourite. in ■ the Trial'. Plate,' but "Winning-Post; Colleen Mary,'-' True Knight, and Peacemaker - were all well supported. The race was simply an exercise canter for Colleen Mary, who won ; with ridiculous case. She' is engaged in' the Douro Cun to-day, and though she i has considerably more weight to" carry, she is sure, to be well fancied. . ' A field of .fourteen contested the, Rustpehu 'Handicap, in which Zealand was .a slig'stlv better favourite than Big Blast. ' The issue was ncvei- in doubt, for Oliver - got the favourite out first, and he led all the way. %, : St. Toney ivas the only withdrawal from the Telegraph Handicap. Dearest, who had been the early favourite in the ' doubles, wcnt-back in-the betting a trifle, her stable-mate, Gipsy Belle, being better supported. Obsono was the actual favourite, but Maori King was a close second; in . the betting. After Full Kate had caused a long delay at the barrier, Mr. O'Con- • nor got the big field away to a good start, but Gin'sy Belle's brilliancy at once car-, . ried her to the front, anc) then the race , resolved - itself into a . procession, the ' - Stepniak. mare leading. the whole . way, ; and winning quite easily from Full Rate. Maori King, who finished third,'was prol>; .. ably going better than any of the others when the post was reached, and over a longer course he would have been very hard to beat. 'Obsono -scarcely ran as well as was expected, and should do bet. tcr when next ho start's. A feature of the day's racing was tha success of the mares, who accounted for ' six of the eight races, and who filled the - three places in the Wellington Cup. Another feature was tho success .of A, Oliver, who rode three winners during the afternoon. . ' "7 SECOND, DAY'S ACCEPTANCES.
