A deputation of insurance companies waited on the Mayor on Saturday morning in reference to the poor pressure of tho borough water supply which lias been experienced lately. Floods destroyed the upper portion of the pipe lino somo (imo ago, since when the supply from the temporary intake has never been wholly satisfactory. Tho Mayor told tho deputation that Mr. Jlarchnnt's suggestions for an improvement of tho intako wero contemplated, and promised to arrange for pumping in (he event of fire. Meanwhile householders and others aro prohibited from using hoses for their gardens, or for washing down, or similar purposes.

SURPRISED AT THE CORONER, WHY NO JURY? • Gisborne, January 22. At a meeting of the Gisborno branch of tiio Political Labour League* a discussion took place regarding .the recent death of a wharf labourer named Poulson, who Was crushed owing to a sling of salt fallin" on him, this being occasioned by a wire ropo breaking. The folloinng motion. was passed unanimously :-''That this branch expresses its surprise and indignation at tho arbitrary action of tho local coroner in holding an inquest on the victim of an industrial accident without a jury."
