ROWING.

■ (Br Mkroort.)' . , February I.—Nelson Regatta. February 18.—Wellington Regatta. February " ■ 25.—Championship • Eegatta i ' ;WangQnui. .• '• . : ' it will be seen: frft'm.thV'foregoing -list that the' date ofl Nelson I 'regatta '.has been advanced from- the original day, February G, to February I.' Thn direct result of this, as far as ,it affects the local crews, is that none of them can make the trip. '" ■; * • The Star Club has .been/busy during the week- disposing • of. its .senior double sculling event. -At the, tirno of "writing three crews; are left'ill—E. M. Brewer's, J.. Bennett's,, and U.-E. Bridge's. 'Die first-named has successfully negotiated his Ercliininary heats, and is now. waiting for is final opponent—the winner of .the Ben-nett-Bridge semi-final. 'Brewer- and his colleague, W. Robertson; have been 'sculling very nicely, and are looked upon as a formidable'crew'for .the final. Regatta work. is. stijl in abeyance as far as the town clubs are concerned. There is under a, month now for training for the Wellington regatta, and it is more than' time that n decided effort was made ,by our rowing men to get itno racing trim. If this effort is not made, and mado by our rowing men £o get" into' Taction of last year's debacle,' when not a Wellington crew won a raco, at.the local meeting. There have been reasons for a certain amount ot dislocation in the Slar Club's crews, .but there has been, no occasion' for the total abandonment of training, and that in some cases is what' has hanpened. Thus, A. R. Brewer, of tho junior crew, has been on tho sick list for a week, and has now definitely retired from the boat. ITis'seat has been taken by his brother "Dick," so there is now no reason-why this quartette should not get their backs into their work in good earnest. The maiden crew has also been minus a man, Aliercroinbie (tho bow) having been out of town for a fortnight or so. Still there are plenty of willing hands in the sliecl who would have been glad to have rowed as a substitute until his return, in order that the work of the other three should not have suffered, but this obvious and necessary bridging of tho difficulty has not. been given effect to. ' The'same thing applies to the youths, who have also lost a man, and their case is tho hardest, fls tho casualty in their boat is M'Kay, their, stroke. M'Kay has, in his enthusiasm, been training "not wisely but too well," with the result that he has been ordered out of the boat until tho end of the month for repairs. ,H. D.

Bridge, last year's stroke, has begun exorcising the crew for the Inst day or so— a step that should have been taken at the first intimation of M'JCay's breakdown, a fortnight ago. M'Kay's ill-luck is regretable in every way, but, fortunately, he has taken tho matter before any permanent damage. has been done, and it is nioro than' likely that ho will be 'back'at work shortly, all tho better for .the .enforced rest. -He has .been showing very good form this sehsDn, and, what is more important, he lias set his crew-a'fine example/in' keenness. i A correspondent .supplies fho following notes regarding Wellington Club doings:— "Owing to the'weather for the past woek, rowin'g has been at a. standstill. Entries j for tho club doublo sculls are now on tlw ' board, and a good-number have already come to hand. . Also the senior doublo sculls are to .be',raced off. in the course of a .week,-and some good races'are anticipated. Tho - Ivempthorno , Fours will be rowed to-day,-and raced out to a finish. The' Selection -Committoe have, repicked the regatta. crews for the' Wellington regatta, and.they, seem: to'bo. a very good lot. In the junior double sculls t<Vo crews have been selected, *and these are to race off about a week before the regatta/ and the winning'crew will represent- the club. • The following are . tho crews:—-.Maiden Fours: C. K; '• Furness ,(str.),;W: .Hinchclift. (3), A. W. Jackson (2), A. N; Mathieson. ~(bow). - Youths' Foxirs: B. Shaw (str.), E. Cairns "(3), J, Aisher (3), C. Symonds (bow). Junior Fours: II;• M'Kinley .(str.)'j J. Bragg (3), C. Standen (2), P. ,Davey (bow). Senior Doublo Sculls': H; M'lunlev- (str;), P. Davey (bow). Junior Double Scull's: No 1, S. Standen (str.), A.-N, Mathieson (bow); No. 2, C. Gray (str.), G. Jones (bow). Maiden Double Sculls: W. Jackson (str.), E; Cairns (bow)r • '. The : club is holding its: annual swimming sports on Saturday, February 11. A committee has I 'already ; been formed to' hold-a dancing class-through the winter .months,-arid it-seeins -that" it will- be a success inasmuch; as it will keep, members and'friends together. '
