NOTES AND COMMENTS,

' ;■ 1 [BY. GLENCOE.] . .''

In anticipation of seeing somet—fast. Kork 6n tho tracks,- a-larga-.-number of city- racegoers visited Trentham . yesterday morning, one motor party .leaving town as early as 3.20 a.m., exactly an hour before -the first horse appeared. Tho weather was again fine, and" tho outside of, tho course proper was open.:for. fast work. A largo nitmber. of the horses wero-. extended. over different,, distances, but .as e heavy., fog obscured'thb 1 bS'ck'.ofV'tlio' - course for the greater part of thft time it was quite .impossible' to put the watch on all of tho' candidates. One or two smart, gallops were, however, registered on the watch.. Of tho Cup candidates which worked,. Los Angeles was given a light task; Miss Mischief and Lady Keina, with lightweights up, galloped once reund together in 2min. 19Isec„ the, la?t mile in- lmin. 48 2-ssec. ' This is not by any means fast as two seasons ago Zimmerman and Master Delaval covered the samo distance in heavy going in 2niin. Msec. Yesterday, however, both Miss .Mischief and Lady Reina could have done better than they did.". Iranui worked on. the tan. GoldI finder (Deeley) covered a round' on tho tan alone, and then went-another round with Dazzling, who was -unable to kern up with the Cup candidate. Parablo (C. Brown) gajlopca a milo alone in lmii'i. 47r.ee. Merrivonia, with a stable boy up, impressed the watchers, by the resolute manner in which she ran a mile in lmin. 4asec. Her gallop was not quite the best , mile, as Lady Medallist got over the distance. a second faster..:■■■

Maori King, who. is'engaged in the Telegraph Handicap, shaped most pleasingly over 6 furlongs on. tho tan. He is looking well, bnt still staffers -with' his feet, on which he how ■ wears • patent shoes, which w.ere procured-fir him-'in! Sydney. Polymorphous, who : looks in fine fettle,..galloped on the tan with'Kilosteri, but was not asked to extend him- ■ gelf much beyond three-quarter pace. Gipsy Belle and Dearest worked together in tho fog, tho former finishing slightly in front. Obsono finished well after going G furlongs. The best half-mile, was credited to Culprit, who covered the distance' in '48 1-ss£c. Over tho same distance Khamsin and Sitiapis took 51 3-Ssec.,' St. Felix and Laiu's 50 -Msec., Byron and Directoire 51 2-ssec., Contendent 51 l-s£ec. - Sunburnt ran tho last three furlongs of a sprint in 37sec. Queen, Sonite, and a lafge aumber of others. Tho half-brother (by Cuirassier) to tho sprinter Turbine has gone into F. ilacmanemin's stable , at Auckland. J. Pinker, who was badly injured- in November, 1909, when First Barrel fell with him in a jumping race, made his reappearance in the saddle at tho recent Whangarei meeting, where he rode Wai■ruha m both hurdle races. " There are still some, eleven candidates -remaining in, the Foxton Cuo, which is to bo run tomorrow. Tho field includes a number- of recent winners,, and a good Taco should result,. . The brood mare Cecilo is returning from Dunedin ta Foxton. Sho has a foal at foot by the imported horse Sarto. Merrie Frank, ono of the light-weight division , in tho Telegraph Handicap, has gone on the right way .sinco winning at Tauherinikau, aiid is a sure starter at Trontham to-morrow.. With the object of reducing weight jockeys A. Oliver, 11. Gray, S. Reid, C* Broivn, and F. D. Jones took train from Trentham to Petone yesterday, and then walked from Petono to tho Turkish Baths. E. J. Rae took several yearlings from 'Auckland to. Yaldhurst for R. J. Jiason, and then camo to Wellington to see the Cup meeting, but yesterday he received a telegram which caused, him to return home.' Since doing a smart gallop on Tuesday morning,> Iranui met with a slight accident. Sho was feeding on the roadside when bot flies troubled her, with the Tesult that sho reared Up and cannoned info a wire fence. Tho Sotilt marc received several cuts beforo tho fence was finished'-with, but her injuries aro not scriou9, and sho is considered a sure starter in tho Wellington Cup to-morrow. Acceptances for the first, dny.'s events at tho Pahiatua Racing Club's meeting close to-night, with the club's secretary, Mr. G. L. Hiiwloy Drew. At Port Adelaide races this month the St. Leonard's Handicap, for two-year-olds, -was won by the Kilcheran filly Drvope, but tho stewards camo to tho conclusion that her rider, Bax, interfered with T.T., and r disqualified him with the filly for three months.lt was apparent-to everybody that Dryope came out from the rail's, but all tho onlookers did not agreo with the stewards that there was aDy actual

interference with T.T., n-lio ran second. Prom all accounts the Kilcheran filly had tho race won at any stage, and very few people would believe that T.T. waf ever within two lengths of her. Among the starters in this event was Lady Valois, who was awarded second place. Particulars of tho pedigree of Lady Valois do not appear in tho Adelaide papers, but she is probably the filly by Achilles from Valois.

Floater, who is engaged at tho Foxton meeting to-morrow, has recently been doing good work oil the Awapuni tracks. Lord .Soult, who was a winner at tho recent liangitikei meeting, is top-weight in the l'lviug llnudicap at Foxton to-morrow. 11.
