No evidence was called for the dofeico in tho slander action brought by Mrs. Horace West ngainAt her father-in-law, Sir Algernon West, P.C. Plaintiff alleged that. Sir Algernon West had slanderously informed Viscount Altirorpe, Ihen Lord Chamberlain, Mrs. Awi'.uth, and others, that slio- was responsible for the separation from lior husband owing lo her hopeless extravagance. The jury found that Sii' Algernon West had spoken to the Lord Chamberlain, and that this prevented the plaintiff receiving Court invitations imlil King Edward intervened. The damages were fixed at ,£IOOO and a further .£250 was awarded plaintiff becauso defendant had also slandered her to Lady Grove.
